During this time the Soviet Union was near the state of strategic parity with the U.S and was on the verge of moving forward with the U.S ICBM launchers. The U.S was
As a result, both countries were constantly in fear of one another because each had the power and resources to destroy the other. If America could get to space first, it would mean we had a huge advantage over the USSR. Reagan put forth the ‘Space Defense Initiative’ which would protect us from the USSR space missiles (The History Rat, “Ronald Reagan and the Space Defense Initiative). Unfortunately, the USSR made it to space before us, but America was not far behind. For some Space Wars are viewed as a failure compared to the USSR, but for Reagan and most Americans, they view Space Wars as a success and a huge accomplishment for our country as a whole.
From a meeting of President Eisenhower’s National Security Council, a conclusion was reached, “…we could not permit ourselves to be panicked by the Soviet Achievement [Sputnik]” (Document 3). The launch of the Sputnik only encouraged Americans to accomplish more scientific breakthroughs—before the Soviets. Before the release of the Sputnik, President Truman had dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Shortly after, the Soviets had detonated their first atomic bomb in the late 1940s. Since the U.S. and the Soviets had both achieved a level of destruction through the atomic bomb they became engaged in an “arms race.”
The United States viewed the space race as a way to stop the spread of communism and prevent the spread of the Soviet Union's influence on Western European nations including France, Italy, and Greece (“The Space Race”). They also used their acomplishments to create new alliances or strengthen old ones as well as spread capitalism. While In the Soviet Union the race and war were seen as a way to strengthen and expand the communist system. They used their success to showcase the superiority of communism (Schlesinger,
America was worried about that how communists could influence america to become a communist state. They did this by promoting communism through public figures. The united states was worried if communist russia will steal important files and information from them. The soviet union would do this by sending communist spied to gather valuable information. This was a problem because they could easily steal nuclear information which could be used against the United states.
Between the years of 1947 and 1991 the USSR and the United States remained in a long period of tension known as The Cold War. This war was a state of political and economical in proxy wars such as the space race and the arms race the lead to the weakening of American society and laws. Marking the end of the Cold War in 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed due to their economic failure and their approach to the space race. As the Cold War intensified there was a significant increase in infrastructures and military, a shift in education, and there was an overall fear in society. Education in the United States began to focus on science instead of general education in an attempt to try and win the “space race” against the Soviet Union.
Sputnik and and Russian innovations had a direct impacted on the polices and politics of American education by focusing public attention on the schools like some homegrown defenders and its critics couldn’t have did. This makes the focus on American education, They reevaluated their education system. This benefits the system and had a impact of the education of American education. In the text it stated “he that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens our skill. Our antagonist is our helper and so it has been with Russian science and American education” this shows to believe that they have impacted the school, policies and politics of the American education.
Although, more severe circumstances took place between America and the Soviet Union due to the fear of atomic weapons and the growing concerns
Also during this time the US and Russia were fighting to see who could get to space first. According to “Address at Rice University on the Nation’s Space Effort.” President Kennedy says, “We have vowed that we shall not see space filled with weapons of mass destruction, but with instruments of knowledge and understanding.” Kennedy addresses the fact that Russia is threatening to use space as a huge weapon if they get there before us. Space was extremely unknown which caused a lot of people to have fear and anxiety especially with Russia making threats to use it as a
When one thinks of the phrase ‘solitary confinement’, a mental image of a dark, damp, small room that one person is forced to stay in without interaction is normally the one invoked. Often, such a thought comes with a hint of fear because it is well known how one can become objectively insane without proper interaction. In the book Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, the author uses complex scenes balancing light and dark and mentions light vs dark almost constantly to invoke this fear within the readers and convey how necessary friendship is to survival. In fact, one of the major themes in the novel is that of loneliness and dejection, which she highlights through the common mention of light equating to life and life to happiness. Alternatively,
Even though Sputnik was indeed a relatively simple satellite compared to the more intricate devices that would come after it, the country was inspired by its beeping signal from space to implement changes in science and engineering education so that it could reclaim the technological lead it had appeared to have lost to its Soviet rival. No of their race, all pupils were entitled to a quality education under Brown v.
One influence was the great depression and during that time unemployment was high and schools were mandatory until age sixteen. This lead to immigrants being forced into the classroom even if they wanted to go or not. This made a huge problem in classrooms because a teacher was expected to teach students that English may not have been their main language. You can imagine how this created a huge problem
Education and technology changed in a massive way during the Cold War. This was because during the Cold War, the United States was on a race with the Soviet Union to get the best technology and one up each other in education, economy political influence, etc. Technology was also heavily influenced because of the War. Some of the things the Soviets and Americans invented weren 't expected for another couple of years and were way ahead of their time. Some of the things invented were Direct Distance Dialing, basic computer language, L.E.D lights, and our very first satellites.
If anything, it kept tensions high between the US and the Soviet Union and it questioned who would make the first
The schools started changing; their curriculums became much stronger in math and science. It was more a goal to develop an engineer than attorney; it just really affected our schools.” From this quotation one can see that the space race influenced the education in the United States and changed it for the better. Bradt says, “Though Sputnik was a relatively simple satellite compared with the more complex machines to follow, its beeping signal from space galvanized the United States to enact reforms in science and engineering education so that the nation could regain technological ground it appeared to have lost to its Soviet rival” (Bradt). Although the Sputnik was not known to be technologically advanced it was the first thing to orbit the earth, it stunned people in the United States and caused an instant response.
