According to the Thesaurus dictionary, the word progressive is defined as “favoring or advocating progress, change, improvement, or reform, as opposed to wishing to maintain things as they are, especially in political matters” (Thesaurus.com). the period between the 1890s and the 1920s is known as the Progressive Era period in American politics. After the Civil war of the 1800s many American advocated for change and economic development in government policy and as a result they came under a umbellar group known as the progressive. The progressive advocacy commenced as a social movement and later transform into a political movement that rejected Social Darwinism. They were a strong force in American politics changing the political landscape by advocating for economic and environmental reform aimed at addressing societal problem such as corruption, poverty, violence, and racism. Not only did they advocated for reform but demand change in government policy geared toward educational empowerment , environmental management and the protection of worker’s health and safety in the workplace. The progressive made a significant impact, reforming government policy often exposing the corruption and corporate greed. But not all women believed in social and economic equality, finding it just as threatening to the fabric of American
