Did you know the American Civil War was one of the deadliest wars fought in the History of America? From 1861 to 1865, America was at war with itself. A deadly battle between The Confederacy and The Union is what we today know as the American Civil War. With over 620,000 deaths throughout the 4 short years, this made it one of the bloodiest events to occur in American history. It started when discussions about whether slavery should be made legal or not created tension between the North and the South. Of course, when a newly elected president was publicly against slavery it caused even greater tensions. Many to this day ponder what was the main cause of the civil war. Secession from the Union was the primary cause of the Civil War because the south felt their only option was to secede in order to preserve slavery, making them feel their only option to protect themselves was War. One of the main reasons why the South decided to secede and go to war, was to preserve slavery, as they were afraid that the Union would exempt it. As defined, a civil war needs 2 sides in order to even define it as that, both obviously disagreeing on a topic that they felt they needed to threaten their countries' unity for. In this case, there was The Union, the North. And the Confederacy, the South. Since the beginning of the expansion of the US, there have always been issues on whether the next state would be a free state or a slave state. As time went on people from the North began to discuss their detest for slavery, and the South quickly caught word and began to feel threatened.
