What were the causes of the Salem Witchcraft Trials? One of the causes for the Salem Witchcraft trials is Abigail Williams not telling the truth to her uncle Rev. Parris, after he caught them dancing in the woods around a fire. Also the next morning when her cousin Betty Parris didn’t wake up, then Mrs. Putnam saying that their daughter Ruth is acting strange. Then when the grown ups walked out room Betty wakes up and saying “You drank blood to kill Goody Proctor”(p.837) Abigail then got mad slapped Betty and told the girls if they told the truth she would kill them. Mary Warren wanted to tell the truth so they wouldn’t get in much trouble, but Abigail wouldn’t let her do that. Mary Warren:”Abby, we’ve got to tell”, Abby: “Oh, we’ll be whipped!”Abigail is just scared & doesn’t want anyone to know she drank chicken blood to kill Elizabeth Proctor. She only drank the charm because wants to be with John Proctor, since they had affair when Abigail worked for them. …show more content…

Hale (witch hunter) came to town and started questioning the girls about who they saw with the devil. He finally got them to talk and say who was there with the devil even though they lied. The girls were scared so they did what Abigail told them, they followed her lead when they finally got to court. I don’t see why the girls don’t just tell the court that this is all made up. Hale did go around to interview the people that were accused but if they denied it then he would have them arrested. The girl were just naming people that they don’t like or feel are less in the community. They named innocent nice and humble people that never did anything wrong to them
