In the Movie What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, starring Johnny Depp plays character as Gilbert & is the brother of his mental retardation brother Arnie. Who also has two sisters Amy & Ellen. Each sibling has there own personal role in the house. They have a mother named Bonnie & a father Albert who died years prior. Every since Albert died, Bonnie lost her motherly role & lost herself along the way. Bonnie has not left the house in seven years & she is the town joke. Bonnie suffers from depression and because of that, she is morbidly obese. While the family is planning Arnie upcoming 18th birthday party, Gilbert meets Becky and her grandmother who are stuck in town due to car troubles. Gilbert quickly falls in love with Becky and his unusual life circumstances can get in the way. Gilbert being in charge of Arnie,he bathes him every night. One night he tells him that he can do it himself, and leaves him to go be with his new love Becky. The next morning he wakes up to his impaired brother silvering in the cold water from the night before. This sparks a lot of problems such as now Arnie is scared of water and later on down the road it is an issue. Although Becky really bonds with Arnie and Gilbert which helps a lot. As they are all hanging out, Arnie disappears from Becky's land and he is found climbing the water tower. Arnie has done this numerous times and the police department arrest him. This is now on Gilbert shoulders because he was supposed to be watching him and the police department will not release him. Mother Bonnie goes down to the police department and retrieves her son. The next day Gilbert returns home for Arnie's birthday party and he apologize for the way he treated him. Gilbert introduces Becky to Bonnie and the party continues on.
