The film When Harry Met Sally offers a large display of romantic concepts that are discussed in the romantic section of social psychology. Three of the most prominent concepts viewers see in the film is the idea of intimate loneliness, self disclosure in relationships, and the idea of a great leap from attraction to love. Intimate loneliness is a type of loneliness where the person lacks a best friend or romantic partner. In the film, Harry displays this after his divorce from Helen. Harry and Sally discuss the space in their beds when Sally remarks she uses the entire bed. Harry still remains on one side of the bed because he is used to sleeping on one side. This includes the sharing of hopes, dreams, and fears. When Sally and Harry start to hang out as friends, they begin to self-discover with each other more than ever. For example, when walking together, Harry discloses his embarrassing dream of being rated on his sexual performance like an Olympic competitor. After this, there is a scene where Sally reveals her dream of a faceless man taking off her clothes. This is a part of the self-disclosure reciprocity. When one partner discloses something, it makes people feel better when the other partner follows suit. This helps Sally and Harry continue to form a more intimate friendship. Finally, there is the idea of the great leap from attraction to love. There are three ideas on how relationships go from attraction to love. In When Harry Met Sally, the great leap idea is displayed between Jess and Marie. There is a double date scene where Sally is set up with Jess and Marie is set up with Harry. While the dinner is going awkwardly, Marrie reveals quotes from some of Jess’ writing she read.
