The book “When Rabbit Howls” by the troops or Truddi Chase’s multiples selves exposes Chase’s journey of recovery and remembrance of violent sexual and physical abuse as a child. Chase had been blacking out at times and could not even account for her own everyday actions, for instance she would be unaware of preparing a meal. By consulting Robert A. Phillips, a therapist who she instead refers to Stanley, readers can see the vivid presence of the people that make up Chase and how they represent aspects of Chase’s life of abuse. Readers can see the control they have on her, because they are her. The overall themes include child abuse and Chase’s journey and strength to face it. Whether it was child abuse or animal abuse, emotional or sexual abuse, I never realized that it could do something like this to anyone. I was shocked and saddened to see how Truddi was living everyday of her life since that first time of abuse at age two. Her whole life was going by with her blacking out or unable to recall anything because she never actually existed- it was the troops who did. I found it to be horrifying, isolated, and empty. Although I knew abuse was utterly unjust and inhumane, I had not paid much attention to it prior let alone knew about the disorders it brought with it. Usually, all i knew of was PTSD, because that was all i had heard of. This book brought light to other lesser known effects of abuse, like MPD, DID, or Truddi's case. I think it is very important to be aware of these different disorders- as many people are affected by them annually. Abuse can be found in any type of household or situation and it’s so crucial to help stop it in time so what happened to Chase does not happen to others. Overall, this book showed me something I had never seen or remotely heard of before. Although it was complex, I am glad I had the chance to read it and learn something
