When Rabbit Howls is a truly powerful account of Trudy Chase’s own life. Facing traumatizing sexual abuse from her own stepfather, Trudy retells her graphic story to psychiatrist Robert A Phillips, Jr., who she calls “Stanley.” Throughout her therapy, Truddi wants Stanley to record their sessions. She asks this as when she had gone to the library to get books about sexual abuse, most of them had been signed out by children. These children were victims of sexual abuse themselves who, according to Truddi, didn’t want to feel like they were alone in their suffering. The quote reminds us of the innocence and livelihood of childhood that was compromised for Truddi due to circumstances outside of her control. Children should have an optimistic “spark” to them, but Truddi lost out on the excitement of her childhood because of the sexual abuse and the torment of the troops. The sexual abuse would be the restrictions and parameters that her stepfather set for her that prevented her from having a real childhood. After running away, Truddi would finally make a better life for herself without the physical and emotional restrictions and parameters she experienced from sexual abuse and neglect. This quote reminds us that freedom is something that should be cherished. Many people at one point or another will face a struggle that can prevent them from living the full and meaningful life that so many of us take for granted.
