The Decameron and The Canterbury Tales became banned by the Comstock Laws (Reimann, 1). The book Tropic Cancer by Henry Miller was published in Paris in 1934. The book Ulysses, which was unbanned in 1933, used to be considered contraband in the United States. The reason it was banned was because it had “too much sex” (Famous, 1). Edith Wharton said that it was “a turgid welter of pornography” (Reimann, 1). Hart Crane stated that someone would kill the author of Ulysses for what was said in the book. When people smuggled this book into the United States, that’s when censors began to lose their power over literature. In Czarist Russia, they have even banned the book. It sold more copies than the Bible in the American 19th century. Abraham Lincoln met with the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and made the comment that she was the one who started this great war (Reimann, 1). People argue that local libraries are not overwhelmed by the censorship caused by the people of the US (Graham, 1). Students, librarians, teachers and parents are who keep books from being banned although sometimes they are unsuccessful (Banned, 1). Politicians in Florida are seeking redemption in censorship (Maxwell, 1). In Florida legislators are trying to pass a bill so that it would be easier for people to banned text books and other reading assignments that people find offensive. In 1982 a Supreme Court stated that school boards cannot simply remove reading materials if they are offended by them (Graham, 1). Over fifty books intended towards young adults have been written by Robert Newton Peck
