This week we were assigned to read to different articles. The first article was written by Peggy McIntosh titled, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”. Throughout the article, Peggy showed the readers what it means to have white privilege. She showed the readers 50 different types of “advantages” that whites get over other races, such as African Americans. This is the biggest theme throughout her entire piece.
The White Advantage “Explaining White Privilege” by Tim Wise was more or less a defense of a more detailed argument on the subject of white advantages based solely on race. Tim Wise did provide several examples from several studies that did explain his theory as it was intended and how it was received. Apparently the original article was not very receptive from the audience when it was published: hence the reason for this short excerpt. The author was trying very hard, not only to defend his article on white privileges, but to provide reasons why the majority of the United States should consider his suggestion as a valid and accurate argument. Though “Explaining White Privilege” was a defense of Tim Wise’s original article, which was not included, he also managed to provide one example using disability people as evidence to support his argument.
1) White privilege is an ongoing societal issue that benefits white people, giving them an upper hand in situations where non-white people would not get the same treatment. For example, when walking down the street, a white person walks freely without concern of being stopped. Someone who is not white doesn’t have the same luxury. Authority stops them just because of their appearance. Tim Wise asked law enforcement what they thought of a black male driving a nice car in a nice neighborhood versus a white male in the same situation.
White Privilege in America Recently in America racial tension has increased because events that’s have been occurring across the country. Across the United States (U.S.) black men have been killed by law enforcement and this has sparked protest in its aftermath. The media has started to give more time to these problems so more Americans have learned about them. This has started a conversation on different social issues that include the dominant culture, social privilege in the U.S. As a young black man this has affected me directly.
Whites are not aware of the privilege they have, simply for the fact that this is their life the majority do not know anything different. And not only are Black people the only ones seeing the effects of America's discrimination, but almost all races that land in America are seeing this racism when compared to white people. While many people acknowledge the existence of racism, there is often resistance to the concept of white privilege. White privilege refers to the advantages and benefits that white people receive due to their skin color, such as easier access to education, employment, housing, and healthcare among many other examples. These benefits are often unconsciously bestowed upon white people, which makes it difficult for them to acknowledge their existence. White privilege is not about individual experiences or choices, but rather about systemic advantages that have been built up over time and have yet to fall.
Over the past decade the term white privilege has emerged in our American history. White privilege is the concept that one particular group is benefited which is typically identified as white people. Most of the victims experiencing harsh conditions are non-white people under the same social, political, or economic circumstances of mistreatment. A conversation took place with a few people about white privilege whose race is identified as white. An interviewer started that “the belief that being white comes with unearned advantages and everyday perks”.
An area of contention in America with regards to racial relationships is the idea of white privilege. The notion that certain people within a society have unwritten societal benefits due to the color of their skin seems unbelievable to some. I want to figure out exactly what white privilege is and if this privilege is universally applicable to all whites in America. I want to know why so many White Americans deny this idea. Can it be explained, or reasoned in a way that makes sense to even the most ardent critics?
1984 Synthesis Essay Poverty negatively influences how the minds of people work in the world. The fact that poverty exists itself, obstructs people from changing their circumstances in what is known as “the cycle of poverty.” The lower class is incredibly disadvantaged in that it lacks the necessary social and economic resources needed to increase chances of social mobility. In return, the absence of these resources may increase poverty. Therefore, the lower class is unable to change its situation because the majority believes that any efforts to climb the social ladder is highly inefficient.

Robert Chambers the author of Poverty in Focus was talking about the one of the disadvantages of poverty and the effects that it causes for example lack of education and social relations One of the statements he was talking about that I found interesting was when he stated “Poverty can happen when incomes are deprived and resources needed to keep society intact and without those resources then society will breakdown from a good neighborhood to a dangerous one.”
Like mentioned in the last paragraph, poverty was the separation of two main groups, which consequently caused discrimination to occur. Based on social and financial statuses, inclusion was exclusive to the higher class people and excluded the lower class. “It flows along an easy slope… one street corner is taken for another” (Praise Darkness). This quote shows that poverty in Latin America was a common occurrence and was easily recognized.
The authors challenge that Clark and Lipset hand picked their data which was supportive to their argument and ignored other data which argued against their point. Essentially, Hout, Brooks, and Manza argue that social classes are not dying. They gather empirical data of their own to support their theory. First, they argue that distribution of wealth is a prime example of why classes are still relevant. They argue that those at the top continue to earn money, while those at the bottom remain poor, and if Clark and Lipset’s interpretations were correct, this would not be the case.
Social Class and inequality have always been interrelated and it is one of the most timely and relevant issue faced by society today. According to Wright and Shin (1988) Social Class is regarded as inexpugnable or it is not usually a subject to change, it is an identity given to people who share the same experience and status in terms of processual concept of Class. Social Classes are oftentimes measured by income, job and education. All of these also determine our socioeconomic status that is why Social class and socioeconomic status are words that correspond to each other, which also pertains to Social Stratification.
