Have you ever wondered what the White House actually was? The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. The term White House is often used to refer to the actions of the presidents and his advisers. The White House was the biggest house until the Civil War. The White House has stood as a symbol of a Presidency, the United States Government, and the American people.

On August 24, 1814 the White House was burned. The Burning of Washington was a British attack against Washington D.C., the capital of the United States, during the War of 1812. The decision to place the capital on two slave states, Virginia and Maryland, ultimately influenced the acquisition of laborers to construct its public buildings. Soon they turned to African Americans to provide the bulk of labor that built the White House, the United States Capitol, and other early government buildings. A major concern in the construction of the new buildings at this remote location was the acquisition of building materials, such as stone, lumber, bricks, hardware, and nails. The White House was built mainly by slaves. The White House Reconstruction, also known as the Truman Reconstruction, was a comprehensive dismantling and rebuilding of the interior of the White House between 1949-1952. Some of the important places in the White House are, the Oval Office, Roosevelt Room, Cabinet Room, Brady Briefing Room, Map Room, China Room, Vermeil Room, Red Room, Blue Room, Green Room, Yellow Oval Room, Treaty Room, Lincoln’s Bedroom, Lincoln String Room, Queen’s Bedroom. There are two wings in the White House, the East and West Wing. The East Wing mainly served as an entrance for guest during large social gatherings.
