I will tell you how the Aztecs were destined to fail because of their myths, legends and the way they worship their gods.

The Aztecs sacrificed their victims at a huge pyramid that was in the middle of the city and when they sacrificed their victims, they would normally do it at the top of the stairs of the stairs. After ripping out the person’s heart they would normally roll the victim down the stairs bleeding and dead. This is where they would sacrifice their offerings to the gods.
Who did the Aztecs think the Spanish were?
There are many wild theories about what the Aztecs thought about the Spanish arriving in Tenochtitlan. All these theories can be narrowed down to one outcome which was that the Aztecs thought that the leader of the Spanish, Cortes Herman was their god Quetzalcoatl.
