“Somebody must explain the 4,000 silent graves that mark the trail of the Cherokees to their exile.” (Burnett) Sadly, this statement is true. Almost 4,000 Indians died on the Trail of Tears, possibly more. Multiple information sources state that this is close to how many Indians died. Most of them died from cold. Others died from harsh winds and outright exhaustion. The Trail of Tears is something that will always be remembered as a tragedy, and will be looked upon as something atrocious the U.S. government did. Hopefully we never repeat the mistakes that our country made in the 19th century, because if we ever repeated these mistakes that means our morals are out of
