While Abigail Williams is not completely responsible for the hysteria and death in the Salem Witch Trials, she is one of the main contributing factors for the historical event in the 1690’s. In the novel “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller Abigail Williams is vengeful, selfish, manipulative, and a liar that uses these things for her self-interest. Her actions cause innocent people to be executed for her personal gain. Abigail never seems to care for any of the villagers in Salem except John Proctor, a married man she had an affair with several months before the events of the play. Abigail used to work for john Proctor and his wife Elizabeth, until Elizabeth found out about the affair between john and Abigail. John repeatedly told Abigail that the affair was over and he would never touch her again saying things like "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again." (Page 23) but she does not accept this, so she tries to kill Elizabeth Proctor through Witchcraft.
