The Yellow Wallpaper was written by a woman named Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who during the late 1800’s to early 1900’s was a famous writer and strived to change social standards for women through her writing. She started writing after having left her husband after suffering from a nervous breakdown and needing a job to support herself after she moved to California in 1890. Her experiences with having to support herself as single women in a society that repressed women’s rights are what drove her to write some of her most famous books and short stories. She wrote The Yellow wallpaper and Women and Economics which dealt with teaching the public about women’s health issues and financial independence are just some of the many short stories and books she wrote to help bring social awareness to women’s oppression from society's standards. The Yellow Wallpaper is about a woman who, along with her husband a physician is headed to a colonial estate so she can heal from a recent diagnosis of a “slight hysterical tendency” (Gilman). Her husband and other family members do not believe she is sick instead they believe all she needs is air, exercise and is forbidden to work of any kind. Even though her husband is a respected physician, she completely disagrees whit his diagnoses. She thinks that sitting around the house with no excitement and work to look forward too will make her feel even worse. To makes matters even worse, none of her family members believes that her illness is real and should be taken seriously. As they arrive at the colonial estate her husband has chosen a large room for them to stay in that used to be a nursery he believes that the big open airy room will cause her to feel better sooner.
