The Fears of Coming Home An Analysis of “Soldiers Home” In the short film “Soldiers Home” written by Ernest Hemingway. A young many named Harold Krebs returns home from WW1 for find things to still be as he left them but still feels as if he does not fit in. His family and friends all try to make sure that he feels right at home and that everything is normal. When in fact Harold feel entirely different as if something is wrong with him. Early on in the film it displays Harold laying around in his room seeming very restless or anxious which could be because he just returned home. Later on in the film it shows Harold avoiding people or ending conversations rather shortly because it would seem like he had nothing in common with the people. At another point in the film Harold is seen talking to his mother and he states that “he doesn’t love anyone”. Now this could be for a numerous amount of reasons but seemingly to readers it’s because of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It would seem as if the experiences of Harold Krebs illustrates the dangers of PTSD. What is it that has caused Harold to head down the road that he is and also what effects does it have on others? The male individual informed Harold how he was injured in the war and how he is just getting by. He also states later on when the two are having a few drinks in Harold’s father car how he is “trying to forget” the things that he saw and heard. This might be an indication that he is dealing with the same issues that Harold is but handling them in a different manor. Later on as stated previously the film depicts Harold not fitting in with the locals in his community which makes him seem very
