In their respective narratives, both Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs expose slavery as a brutal and degrading institution. Though the tone and approach they incorporate in their individual narratives differ, both seek to renounce the romanticized view of plantation culture and reveal the harsh actualities. Jacobs also seeks to debunk the stereotypical notion that house slaves lived a more privileged life than plantation slaves. Furthermore, Jacobs goes on to explain the role of the slave-mistress and how that complicates the life of a slave girl growing up in a house with a licentious master and his jealous wife.

Throughout the narrative, the author includes his personal stories about experiencing the violence of slavery first-hand. For example, on page 20, he writes about the first time he witnessed a slave, his own aunt, getting the whip. “The louder she screamed, the harder he whipped; and where the blood ran fastest, there he whipped longest…I remember the first time I ever witnessed this horrible exhibition… It struck me with awful force. Slavery Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacob’s stories vary vastly from previous narratives; as former slaves rather than as white northern abolitionists. While both write on their own personal experiences, each autobiography varies deeply in how they chose to write their stories. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Douglass has a primary focus of slavery on a larger level, while in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Jacobs focuses her individual relationships and the effects of slavery on them. Although Douglass relies on the power dynamics of slavery to promote abolition, Jacobs uses the communal relationships amongst slaves and slave owners to achieve the same purpose, therefore both use their relationships

Jacobs decided to write her autobiography “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” in order to share the true life of enslaved women, since men wrote most autobiographies. She wanted a woman’s perspective and she thought she was obliged to write it because she was well educated for a black woman during the times of slavery. Her life and other people alike her had their lives greatly affected by Andrew Jackson and his political roles during the late 1920’s to early 1950’s. Jackson’s policies, politics, and societal roles during and after his presidency affected the lives of enslaved women in the United States between 1828 and 1850.
In Fredrick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs narrative they show how the institution of slavery dehumanizes an individual both physically and emotionally. In Jacobs narrative she talks about how women had it worse than men did in slavery. While men suffered, women had it worse due to sexual abuse. The emotional, physical, and sexual abuse was dehumanizing for anyone.
Harriet Ann Jacobs is the first Afro-American female writer to publish the detailed autobiography about the slavery, freedom and family ties. Jacobs used the pseudonym Linda Brent to keep the identity in secret. In the narrative, Jacobs appears as a strong and independent woman, who is not afraid to fight for her rights. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was published in 1961, but was unveiled almost 10 years later due to the different slave narrative structure. As her years of conducting the railroad culminates, Harriet starts her career of concocting superb speeches on top of her head. Not only was the audience moved, but they were also surprised of how inspiring her tone of voice is (207). In addition, as she tells her own synopses of her life, Harriet speaks her story with dramatic interpretation and excellent eloquence in a speech so well that the audience was thrilled upon scheduling another speech with Harriet. In one of her speeches, Harriet ferociously convinces a little boy to holler ‘Fire, fire’, which is a feat that only parents can normally do, let alone a stranger. (126) Also, Harriet persuaded, not always by cajoling, with a deep-tone husky voice and a gun in her hand, a despaired slave to continue on the journey instead of wavering on the decision to either turn back and risk punishment, or to go to freedom.
“Harriet the Spy” was written by Louise Fitzhugh and was originally published in 1964. The author liked to focus on contemporary social issues when writing her books. She did focus on social issues within this book as well such as bullying.
