As a woman, Harriet Jacobs faced unique challenges in the slave society. She was forced to endure sexual abuse from her owner and struggled to protect her children from the same abuse. This experience is clear in her narrative, which focuses mainly on the sexual misuse of female slaves. She writes with passion, using her own experiences to gain the attention of free women in the North (Jacobs).
Frederick Douglass & Harriet Jacobs Slavery has been noted as one of the biggest social issues in America. From the beginning of time, race has been seen as a barrier for some people despite their various attempts at equality none seem to yield any positive results. Frederick Douglas and Harriet Jacobs both have tried to be seen as equal to others but come up short due to the oppression of their skin color. But as a result of their power to not conform to being enslaved and treated like objects due to dehumanization is what leads them on their journey to becoming one of the few free slaves. “My natural elasticity was crushed, my intellect languished, the disposition to read departed, the cheerful spark that lingered about my eye died; the dark night of slavery closed in upon me; and behold a man transformed into a brute.”
In Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs tells of her experiences as a slave. She had to endure the hardships that came with both being black and a woman in 1861. As a slave she was supposed to serve and obey her master. As a woman she was supposed to be submissive to men. She describes several situations in her memoir that would make me oppose slavery if I were a Northern white woman in 1861.

In the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass by Fredrick Douglass and Incidents in the Life of An American Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs, we are able to see unusual experiences of slaves in urban settings. Without these two people living in urban settings they might not have been able to escape and tell us their stories. Their communities influenced their experiences as slaves, their possibilities for resistance and escape, and their relationship with their masters. Jacobs and Douglass have been very fortunate to live in the urban settings that they did, not many of the slaves were able to live this way.
Analogous in form to the spiritual autobiography, the slave narrative emphasizes the difficulty of upholding moral goodness under the weight of slavery. By revealing herself as a “fallen woman” Jacobs creates a hazardous problem, capable of eliminating the sympathies of a primarily white audience. Moreover, Jacobs risks portraying herself as an impure woman, whose virtuousness departs from the piousness and gracefulness typically exemplified by the ideal woman or “angel in the house,” according to the “Cult of True Womanhood.” Therefore, in an effort to preserve the ethos of her argument, Jacobs attributes her unchaste condition to the systemic effects of American slavery. Hoping to destroy the ideology of benign paternalism, Jacobs reveals her consequential ethical dilemma through a faint description of her master’s, Dr. Flint’s, licentious behavior.
The Known World, a fictional historical novel by Edward P. Jones, and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, an autobiography written by it titular Frederick Douglass, are both texts that portray life on a plantation in the 19th century, during the age of slavery in the United States. They have some similarities as a result of the setting. However, both works were created with different purposes in mind, resulting in many differences between the two. As an autobiography, Frederick Douglass’s piece is much more personal and thus more subjective than that of Jones’s. Douglass describes many details with strong adjectives.
1) Harriet Jacobs chooses to start her biography with her childhood and how extremely fortune she is. The very first sentence is “[She is] BORN a slave; but [she] never knew it till six years of happy childhood ha[s] [went] away ” (8). The reason why she does not know she was born a slave is because “she never dream[s] [she is] a piece of merchandise” (8). Jacobs, Linda the protagonist, says “When [she is] six years old, [her] mother die[s]” (9), and that is when Linda realizes that she is a slave. This is why Linda believes that her childhood happiness ends due to the horrifying things slaves have to do.
In Fredrick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs narrative they show how the institution of slavery dehumanizes an individual both physically and emotionally. In Jacobs narrative she talks about how women had it worse than men did in slavery. While men suffered, women had it worse due to sexual abuse. The emotional, physical, and sexual abuse was dehumanizing for anyone.
The document Frederick Douglass Narrative, excreted from his 1845 autobiography, is about his life as a child slave on a plantation. Vividly describing his childhood in his opening chapters, readers get the full effect of what not only happened to Douglass, but what was also the norm for most of American slaves. He wrote about his knowledge and experiences as a child slave, and gave readers the true meaning of what slave families went through, in comparison to what was published in the media by whites. One of the main arguments presented in Douglass’s autobiography is the way women are treated and how they live as a family. Douglass uses his Narrative to share his position is by telling his audience how unfairly Douglass is treated and how white men or slaveholders take control of the life of a slave because in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass on page 1 paragraph 1 it says, The nearest estimate I can give makes me now between twenty-seven and twenty-eight years of age. I come to this, from hearing my master say, some time during 1835, I was about seventeen years old.” What this piece of evidence is demonstrates is that Frederick Douglass did not even now his own birth and that he had to guess on what his master said and that his master knows more what Frederick knows about his life. Another way that Douglass’s uses his Narrative to share his position is by telling their audience how unfairly Frederick and many other slaves were treated because because in the Document “‘ Pro Slavery Arguments South’’ on paragraph 6 it says,”Southern slaveholders pro-slavery arguments defended the interest of the plantation owners against attempts by abolitionists, lower classes, and non-whites to institute a more equal social structure.”
In this narrative, he also shows the reader himself experience many beating and acts of torture. His life was a change forever when he was sent to work on a plantation in Baltimore, from where he escapes. He takes the reader from his experience of fleeing to a free state in the north. The whole narrative describes his experience in vivid details his experience of being a slave it also reveals his psychological insight into the slave vs master relationship. The narrative is a powerful document that shows Douglass ability to transform himself from an illiterate, oppressed slave to an educated.
In the book, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass reveals his life as a slave and the valuable lessons he learned from his experience. Douglass wants the truth about slavery to be revealed and wants to eliminate the lies that portray slavery as beneficial. Douglass exposes the reality of slavery by criticizing the “romantic image” of slavery, showing the intellectual capabilities slaves had, and revealing the reasons why slaves were disloyal to each other. Douglass criticizes the southern, romantic image of slavery by exposing the harsh treatment and sadness that slaves endured. It was southerners who thought slavery as beneficial, because it benefited themselves and white society.
