The introduction of the book is how John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln’s killer, and his accomplices, made a plan to kidnap the American president, but their plan failed. So, John Wilkes Booth and his little gang decide to kill the President, the Vice President, and the Secretary of State in one night. John Wilkes Booth would kill the president at Ford’s theater, His accomplice George Atzerodt would kill the Vice President at the Vice President’s hotel room. Lewis Powell and David Herold would kill the Secretary of State.

Five days after the Confederacy’s surrender, John Wilkes Booth had successfully killed one of the most influential presidents in American history to do what he believed would redeem power to the southern states. John Wilkes Booth killed the president of the United states, Abraham Lincoln in Ford 's theater Washington D.C. in 1865. Booth thought assassinating the president would make the south stronger, but it did not. John Wilkes Booth thought that killing Lincoln would make America a better country (John Wilkes Booth had thought). He was trying to exchange Lincoln 's life for saving his preconceived foundations of the country, but this did not go as planned.

Booth’s new and improved plan was to take out the Secretary of State, President, and Vice President, the three most powerful and needed men of the south. John Wilkes Booth took advantage of the fact that he was an actor and used that excuse to get into Ford Theater, located in Washington D.C., where he knew that President Lincoln would be with his wife and some companions, attending a comedy. As President Lincoln watched the theater performance, Booth came up from behind him and shot him in the head. President Lincoln could not be saved and was later pronounced dead. Many citizens greatly mourned his death since it was such a tragedy that ensued in a time of happiness for many; just as the Civil War had ended, his death marked the beginning of a new United States. Lincoln would not get to enjoy this new country that he had envisioned since the beginning of his presidency.
November 13, 1833, Edwin Booth was brought into this world. He was born near Bel- Air, Maryland. His father was a Shakespearean actor, and soon after, he and his two brothers would be to. As a result of his father being an actor, he had very little schooling, although he was a brilliant actor. Edwin was shy, quiet, and introverted as a child, while John was friendly, good natured, and outgoing.
