It is said that heavens breeze was so cold it cut through your skin like shattered glass and run through your veins with volumes of venom so dense that it could leave any person insane on La Follette’s wintery night of 1904. Isabella lived in the center of town in an apartment above her flower shop. Elders of today claim that it was very common to leave their windows open to listen to the ruckus that would carry on through the night’s end. In a world this venomous, flowers are often a reminder that growth and beauty stem from locations so dark that you are unable to estimate its growth until it reaches the surface and is exposed to the earths air. It was around 2 am when most of the town was awakened by loud men forcibly encouraging everyone to get out of their homes and follow them to safety. They did not talk much during the journey up the mountain. It took all she had to walk without panting. The further she got, the more she looked back, the brighter the village became. It appeared like morning although she had only gone to bed hours before. After a couple of hours of walking, the group came to the top of the mountain where they could see the entire village. Reverend Young was right. The village that was once so wide and wonderous, full of optimism and hope was now so different. The group watched in amazement as architecture had turned completely to ash. It was only the beginning of winter, but the ground was covered in snow so steep that the wind was believed to carry ashes for a decade to follow. But this night, the ashes slithered through the earth like zephyr, solemnly submitting itself to the wind. Isabella remained with the reverend for a while, replaying life’s memories in her head.
