Government is a necessity in order to have civilization. Golding demonstrates this in his book Lord of the Flies. A leader's purpose is to guide, manage, and assist a group in any situation. There are many qualities of a good leader such as honesty, ability to delegate, confidence, communication, intuition, and the ability to inspire. There are three candidates for who should rule on the island. Ralph, Piggy, and Jack are the candidates and each have a different way of leading. Throughout the story Ralph has the best interest of the group and isn't as corrupted by the savagery as the other and therefore should ultimately be the leader on the island. Piggy is the one who's intellect was behind most of Ralph's decisions as we see in the first chapter when Piggy convinces Ralph to blow on the conch shell to summon the others. Ralph's power and influence over the boys at the beginning of the novel is secure. Ralph vocalizes this authority when he lifts the conch which is a symbol of authority and says “Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things.” (Golding, p. 22) Ralph tries to bring order order to the chaos developing on the island. Ralph lays down rules for the boys about keeping the rules, using the conch, and getting rescued. Even as Jack tries to take control we see Ralph regain the authority when he states “We've got to have special people for looking after the fire. Any day there may be a ship out there and if we have a signal going they'll come and take us off. And another thing. We ought to have more rules. Where the conch is, that's a meeting. The same up here as down there.” (Golding, p. 42) Ralph is usually the first one to step up in a situation to benefit the well-being of the entire group. Here we see Ralph as a leader stand up to Jack for abusing the rules and disrespecting Piggy.
