“I was born with the devil inside of me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer (Holmes).” This is what Henry H. Holmes said after killing around two hundred innocent Americans. Holmes built a murder castle and killed his friend and his children, even a celebrity. Henry Holmes was a famous con artist and serial killer who would seduce and kill women and then collect their life insurance from them.
Again, Ravana notices that Rama maybe a primordial god, Ravana concludes, ‘… I will not stop my fight until I defeat and crush him or at least take him prisoner’ (36). Ravana’s determination easily becomes desperation establishing that in one’s society the idea of focusing and succeeding can be facilely overturned to desperation and failing. In the Ramayana, Hanuman is depicted as a faithful servant and ally to Rama, accompanying him on his journey and helping him in his quest to rescue his wife. As the poet Valmiki writes, "Hearing Rama's words, Hanuman, that valiant and wise monkey, took a tremendous leap, and in a moment he was gone" (p. 662). Similarly, in the Epic of Gilgamesh, Enkidu is portrayed as a loyal friend and companion to the hero, providing him with strength and support. Since the beginning of time, people have looked to a figure of power that would help them in their time of need. In Edith Hamilton’s Mythology: Edith Hamilton, there are stories upon stories that tell about righteous and wicked gods, goddesses, and epic heroes. When discussing epic heroes, it’s usually the same two figures that come up, Perseus and Theseus. Arguably, between the two, Theseus is the better epic hero because he is ethical and morally upright and because his life ends tragically. Now when it comes to what an epic hero is, there are many traits and characteristics, some of those being: having significance and glory, going on a quest to establish greatness, and facing enormous tasks of adversity.
Gilgamesh is an epic hero in the story Gilgamesh: A New English Version because he endured a long journey. A common trait that all epic heroes share is their long journey that they must travel in search of triumph, treasure etc. Some evidence for this is "At four hundred miles they stopped to eat, at a thousand miles they pitched their camp. They had traveled for just three days and nights, a six weeks’ journey for ordinary men. " Ordinary people could never have traveled this length hence why they're epic.
During part of the poem, the epic hero displays actions that prove his courage and cleverness to be legitimate. For instance, “Now, by the gods, I drove my big hand spike deep in the embers, charring it again, and cheered my men along with battle talk to keep their courage up: no quitting
Despite his superhuman characteristics, Odysseus proves to be a false hero whose human imperfections, such as pride, vulnerability, and ignorance, define character. But Odysseus shows he has traits of an epic hero. He showed his intelligence when he disguised him and his men as a sheep so that the cyclops would unwittingly let them out the cave. Also, Odysseus had the hero like quality to lead. He showed this quality by keeping his men together for the most part by earning their loyalty and devotion he lead them and they were by his side even when they fought Scylla.
The qualities that make an epic hero are strength, courage a strong mentality, and the aspiration to achieve heroic acts. Many heroes are considered role models as they make brave decisions attempting to do something extraordinary. Heroes often fight against the causes of evil as they try to make the environment a better place. Hercules (son of Zeus) is one of the many known Gods to Greek mythology. He is supernatural and immortal.
The first quality they share is courage. The two heroes demonstrate their courage in a different way. Beowulf is a hero with a lot of courage because he fights without weapons. He does not believe in using weapons to kill people. Beowulf is described as: “Dripped with his enemies blood”.
I woke drenched in sweat, shaking uncontrollably. Every person gets at least one nightmare a week. Imagine if all the monsters from your dreams were real. Well in the book Beowulf: A New Telling they are. A hero is needed, but not any hero an epic hero.
The Epic of Gilgamesh, written by ancient Sumerians, is the epitome of an epic hero poem. Gilgamesh is described as being two-thirds god and one-third man. Gilgamesh may already be the king or Uruk, but what makes him a true hero? Epic heroes all share similar characteristics.
When I say he puts others before him self I'm describing the fact when he faced the beast Humbaba he did not turn around and run I felt as if he stayed and fought the beast to protect his people. This shows another characteristic that shows he is an epic hero. Gilgamesh was strong two thirds God
The Odyssey by Homer tells the story of Odysseus’ drawn-out, treacherous journey through the dark and unknown seas to Ithaca. After successfully defeating the Trojans in the Trojan War, Odysseus faces various obstacles, which test his worthiness in society. Odysseus is the iconic epic hero because he exemplifies all of the characteristics of that archetype. An epic hero is a figure in society that is idolized because of their admirable traits and ability to spark hope within the hopeless. The concept of epic heroism is incredibly significant because of its eternal life and its survival through ancient times to modern popular culture.
