The film Hunt for the Wilderpeople, directed by Taika Waititi, is about a teenage boy who has been in a lot of foster homes. When he gets accepted by his new foster parents who live on a farm, Bella, his foster mother, dies suddenly not long after. Ricky decides to run away to the wild as he doesn’t want to go back to child services and Hector (Hec), his foster father, joins him. During their adventure, Hec and Ricky form a relationship. Through this relationship, we see how Hec changes and we also get a better understanding of who these two characters are. The relationship between Ricky and Hec changes throughout the film. At the beginning of the film, Hec was quite grumpy and he is introverted and doesn’t have much to do with Ricky. When Ricky joined the family, Hec was grumpy and didn't talk much because he is introverted and used to living in isolation. When Bella dies, He thought Ricky should go back to child welfare because he didn’t know what to do with Ricky. He says to Ricky “It was Bella that wanted you here, not me.” He doesn’t know how to relate to Ricky or how to respond to him. He also gets easily angered, for example when Ricky says he can’t read and makes fun of him, He yells at Ricky and starts to run after him but falls over on a root and fractures his leg. Hec knows how to survive in the wild, for example he teaches Ricky the “knack" to catch food, As Hec connects with Ricky during their adventure we learn Hec has a softer side as he stops getting angry with Ricky even when Ricky almost got them both arrested, he wasn’t as grumpy. We learn how much Hec needs family just as much as Ricky does and how their bond made them both better people. He becomes nice to be around and is kinder to Ricky and learns how to connect with him.
