THEORIST 1: Thomas Hobbes, a 17th Century philosopher, argues that man is selfish and can justify the demeaning and condescending actions during the Crusader’s football game. Thomas Hobbes is well known for his political philosophy and his philosophy of man. His main concern is of social and political order, in which he contemplates how humans can coincide with one another in peace, and in avoidance of uncivil encounters. Sally Gearhart is a modern day theorist who is still alive, and is very passionate about feminism and political activistism. Gearhart explains that the feminism of rhetoric is trying to switch from a male perspective to a female perspective. In her opinion, rhetoric is not just language; it is any sort of action or thought towards another person. As Gearhart explains, “any intent to persuade is an act of violence” (241). She believes that this is the reason for all of the violence in the world today. Furthermore, the feministic and male rhetoric parallel the theory of “nature versus nurture” concept. The male version is the nature side, which is harsh and cruel. The feministic approach is the nurture side, which is respectful and caring. These apply to all situations in life where there is the opportunity to present a genuine and benevolent response, or a blunt and crude response. Gearhart states that communication should be viewed as a “woman-like process” (200). When followed, communication can thus turn into a calming act and create a peaceful environment.
