One of the most infamous Tricksters in modern society is DC Comics' The Joker. The Joker is the notorious archenemy of Bruce Wayne/ Batman. The Joker is possibly one of the intriguing villains in comic book and movie franchise history. He has been portrayed by many different actors from Cesar Romero to Mark Hamill, to the most recent portrayal, by Jared Leto in the Suicide Squad. Each and every version has had vastly different characteristics, origins, and personal qualities. Although there has always been one key quality. He has no desire for power, sex, money, or revenge. There is nothing the joker wants but chaos and to bring Gotham City and Batman into a new era that as chaotic as he is. He makes light fun of the suffering he causes to the people of Gotham. The Joker does not follow logic or order but instead wants to change Gotham in bizarre ways into anarchy. He rebels against the authority Batman holds in Gotham City and wreaks havoc. His clown persona is about the fun and enjoyment he takes from his crimes. His actions go from playful hijinks, most apparent in 50s-60s Batman comics, to some of the much much darker horrific crimes he commits in more recent variations. The Joker makes light of the dark and twisted. The jokes and pranks he plays are deadly but he has his purpose. He enjoys performing his tricks in a very theatrical manner for his prefered audience, The Batman and the people of Gotham City. His weapons include a cut-throat card deck, a deadly joy buzzer, an acid spewing lapel flower, and exploding cream pies. The Joker mocks the laws and Gotham, as well as the audience’s view of the great hero Batman. The Joker is the antithesis to Batman. They are like yin and yang. An agent of chaos versus a knight of order. While The Joker is the main villain of Gotham City, Batman is the hero. While Batman serves a higher good of justice, The Joker only serves himself. The Joker is spontaneous and fun, while Batman is serious and routine. Bruce Wayne(aka Batman) has a place in the high society of Gotham and is discreet, polite, follows social convention and can represent the superego of the psyche. While in reverse our trickster represents the ID, a slave to his carnal desire without logic. Batman is the only person who the Joker sees as an equal, instead of below him. The only adversary worthy of him. The Joker is obsessed with Batman. He sees their rivalry as a game. The Joker has stated that they live for each other, there can’t be one without the other. The great hero cannot be complete without his even greater villain. He has even said to batman “you complete me”. Batman who as a child witnessed his parents’ murder, swears to avenge their murder and clean up crime in Gotham. In more than one origin story The Joker is the reason for the death of Batman’s parents and vice versa Batman is the reason The Joker becomes the clown inspired criminal mastermind.
