The American Revolution had 2 sides of it, the patriots and the loyalists/British. The patriots fought for freedom such as freedom of speech, religion, and press, while under the rule of Britain, the Americans had none of these. While the loyalist was loyal to the king of Britain and thought the British rule economy would be stable and that British rule comes with security. The way Jerry died was by being captured by the continentals or the British when they stormed Captain Betts's house who was a captain for the Patriots. They were both captured and taken to a British prison ship. The British Let Captain Bett go while Jerry got sick and died in 3 weeks. Sam went to join the patriots and fight in the war despite his father's disapproval. The way Sam had been killed was through execution. One night while Sam was visiting Tim and his mother they heard people from the patriot's army stealing cattle for food. Sam chased them while Tim was collecting the cattle they didn't steal. Sam came back with his hands tied behind his back with the cattle thieves behind him framing him for stealing the cattle. Tim tried to prove that it wasn't Sam who stole the cattle but couldn't. The general of the group of soldiers had the plan to show what happens to people who steal from the people there trying to fight for. Sam was Executed by men shooting their guns at him. In the novel Tim see’s “Sam slammed backwards as if he’d been knocked over by a mallet. I never heard the guns roar’...’He went on jerking with flames on his chest until another soldier shot him again. Then She stopped jerking”(Collier pg208). The irony in this is that Tim expects the patriots to release Sam because he had been fighting for them for 3 years and the fact that it was his cattle but the patriots still kill the same.
