The word crucible means to go through severe test or trial and Arthur Miller is successful in showing this in his book 'The Crucible'. He depicts the characters such that each of them faces a hardship in their life especially the charter John Proctor. He is the protoganist of the book, but has many flaws. In the book Miller shows Proctor as a sinner, who feels guilty throughout the book for his sin of adultery. He shows his remorse by swearing to never touch or look at Abigail Williams again, makes the difficult decision of accepting his crimes in the court and when he on the death trial he repeteadly tells Elizabeth that he is not good man and does not deserve to die like saint like others such as Rebbeca nurse. They used to have a servent named Abigail, who used to work for them. However, when Elizabeth got sick Proctor and Abigail were envolved in a secret affair. But once Elizabeth becomes aware of this is instantly throws Abigail out of her house, and is very disappointed in Proctor. Proctor realizes his mistake and does his best to apologize to Elizabeth and stay away from Abigail. He feels guilty for his sin and is reminded of them more frequently when he enters his house. But before the witch trials start he has goes to Salem to see what the matter is, here he encounters Abgail. Abigail still has feeling for Proctor and tries to seduce him. However, Proctor says, "But, I will cout off my hand before I'll ever reach ofr you again"(Pg 23). In this Act Proctor makes it clear to Abaigail that he has no feelings for her and whatever happened between them was just a mistake, which he will never commit again. He tries to stay away from Abigail but she keeps says that he still loves her, and it's his wife that is stopping them from being together. This shows the vengeance and hatred which Abigail has for Elizabeth and she is ready to do anything to be with Proctor. In this Act Proctor feels very guilt and shame for his sins. He knows what he has done was wrong and his must never do it
