A Plague on Both Your Houses Are there only a few to blame for the tragic story of these two lovers? In the writer of this essay’s eyes, there are many people to condemn for the tragic ending of Romeo and Juliet. But most of all, fate is to blame for this tragic story. Although many readers hold the two families responsible, the writer of the essay sees that everyone involved shares pieces of the guilt, but fate binds those pieces together. Fate holds all parties responsible for The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. An example of this view comes from the introduction, where it says “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life”(Shakespeare 807). The two families are in an ongoing feud, and they do not want to quit fighting and accept their part of the issue. Before marrying Romeo and Juliet, Friar thought that if the families figured out that the two were married, they could get very angry. But instead of listening to his mind's warnings, he went on and married them. Although there were many obstacles in their way, Romeo and Juliet continued to fight for their love, and the families continued to clash. This led them into the trap that fate had set for them. In Acts Three and Four, the families become fortune’s fools so to speak. The two families continue their villainous frays and fights. Tybalt kills Mercutio, and Romeo gets his vengeance. Romeo had been banished and Juliet’s family planned a wedding between her and Paris. After Romeo killed Tybalt, he realized what they had been snared into and cried out; “I am fortune's fool!”(Shakespeare 869) .
