The main characters in the story are Beowulf, Grendel, Grendel’s mother, the dragon, and Hrothgar—king of the Danes
Thor Wignutt may seem like the average eleven year old boy, but Michael Chabon made sure that his character had a much deeper meaning. Throughout the story, the author makes many references to people and settings from Norse Mythology and Native American Folklore. In the case of Thor Wignutt, he is very similar to the Norse Mythology god Thor. Of course their names are exactly the same, but there is more meaning behind their personalities.
The Danes were happy again, but as soon as they started to celebrate the worst happens. Their assumption had led to another murderous, creature to rise. Grendel and his mother are outsiders who show traits of being like Cain, an enraged individual who killed his brother. Showing their worst side and ruining peoples lives intrigue them both. “The Death of Balder” is a Norse myth about about a god named Balder who was loved by all. Because of this, the gods did everything they could to keep him safe. However, Loki an evil god finds a way to kill him. The gods try to bring him back to life, but fail. The myth “Indra and the Dragon” is an Indian myth about a god who goes to take back seven rivers from Vritra, a dragon who stole them.
I chose “Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, the Sword of Summer” by Rick Riordan as my book because I enjoy reading Rick Riordan’s stories. He usually writes about greek mythology, but this book is about Norse mythology, which I find fascinating. So far, Magnus has broken into his uncle’s house, summoned a sword and had engaged in a fight that resulted in his death. Upon learning that his family- who had not contacted him since the death of his mother two years ago- was looking for him, Magnus set out to find answers.
Beowulf is injured in the fight, and he dies along side his defeated
Beowulf is the main hero in the poem, and he travels to the land of the Danes to help King Hrothgar get rid of the monster Grendel. After having slain Grendel, there is still a huge crisis present. Grendel’s mother comes to the Hall of Heorot to avenge the death of her kinsmen by killing Aeschere. Aeschere is one of Hrothgar’s most trusted advisors, and his loss bear’s heavy on Hrothgar’s heart. In the culture displayed in Beowulf, the bonds of friendship and kinsmanship are very important to the characters.
It is a tragic love story for Odin James. Odin James, who is played by Mekhi Phifer, is the only black guy in white boarding school. Odin is also the star on the Hawks basketball team of the prep school . He also is in love with Desi Brable, the Deans daughter and the most popular girl in school. Odin listens to rumors told by Hugo instead of just asking his friend or his girlfriend about what is going on.
We start off in a land ‘far far way’ to this young hero who’s name is Beowulf now we follow him to one of his battles. Beowulf might have his down falls but come on the guy is insane when he go in to battles. We will skip to the most epic battle Beowulf has ever face and his opponent was Grendel. Now Grendel wasn’t the most nicest monster I say that because he would come up out of his cave and came up and ate everything human in the meat hall.
Zeus and Odin Zeus and Odin are gods from Greek and Norse mythology respectively. These two mythologies follow many myths and legends, like gods, demigods, and monsters. These myths were used to explain why unexplainable happenings back then, like seasons, happened. Both mythologies have such popular tales that they are still relevant in pop culture today. They are well known for being the most powerful gods and the leaders of the other gods.
There is only one man that is not afraid to confront this enormous beast, Beowulf. Beowulf is fearless and eventually rips the arm off of Grendel and brings it upon King Hrothgar. The people are overjoyed and feast in the great hall. Grendel’s mother however is furious about the death of her son. Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother with his sword.
Loki was one of the most dynamic and detrimental characters and caused much of the chaos in the realm of Asgard. In Norse Myths and Legends, it states that Loki, half giant, half god, was friends with the mighty gods Odin and Thor (4). Thanks to his close relationship with Odin, Loki began moving up the social hierarchy and became associated with many powerful gods such as Thor. After arriving in Asgard, Loki began causing trouble. However, he was never severely punished for his actions because his affiliations with the major gods made him virtually untouchable.
For both Beowulf and Thor there is a great enemy. While Thor is sent to Earth and stripped of his powers, his brother Loki is becoming King of Asgard and that threatens the realm, making him the enemy. Loki is Thor’s brother which causes more conflict within Thor. In Beowulf, the last and greatest enemy was the dragon. It was difficult for Beowulf to defeat the dragon it threatened the people of Heorot, so Beowulf, being king, knew he had to risk his life for his people.
There are many subliminal Norse mythologies mixed within in American Gods. In the end Wednesday who is actually Odin (the supreme Norse god), turns out to be playing the ancient and modern gods. The motives of this story are comparable to a story in which Odin orders a goddess to begin a strife among two vassals so that the blood spilled upon the battlefield to have the blood spilled be dedicated to him (Cotterell 217). Another instance, that referenced in a roundabout way from Norse Mythology is when Mr. World(Loki), says on page 525.”When
