World War 1 intended to be “the war to end all wars”, yet 20 years later the 2nd World War began. On the 1st of September 1939 Hitler invaded Poland, Britain and France then declared war on Germany. Was this the cause of WW2? Or was it the result of bubbling tensions fuelled by the harsh restriction of the Treaty of Versailles and failures of an international league sought to protect, paired with the rising of an extremist-fascist dictator that was repeatedly appeased? World War 2 was one of the most devastating and brutal events in our history, leaving over 60 million people dead. The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty signed on the 28th of June 1919, by the Allied Powers or the “Big Three”, Britain, France and the USA. It’s main objective was to keep peace between nations, however put strict obligations on Germany to prevent them from rebuilding. The “War Clause”, known as Article 231 …show more content…

Military rebuilding was one thing, but the ‘Lebensraum Policy’, crossed the line. The Stresa Front was introduced by France and Italy in 1935 to prevent Germany expanding to Austria. But, in 1936 the Rhineland was remilitarised and Austria was reoccupied soon after, Sudetenland was Hitler’s next target. This forced the British Prime Mister, N. Chamberlain, to make a decision; ally with communist Russia or negotiate with Hitler’s regime. Yet, against the advice of foreign minister, Anthony Eden, Hitler’s request was appeased once again. In return the Munich Agreement was signed, ceding the Sudetenland for “Peace in out time” -N. Chamberlain. Then, Czechoslovakia was invaded by Hitler in 1939 and it was apparent he couldn't be trusted. This speculation was later reinforced by the violation of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pack between Germany and Russia, Poland was to be divided, although Hitler didn’t share.
