Shakespeare’s renowned tragic play ‘Macbeth’ was written in the 1500s to entertain and please King James I of England. The story follows a once noble and valiant knight turned tyrannous called Macbeth in his journey as he navigates his way through the dangerous waters of ambition and greed that ultimately result in his death. Macbeth at the start of the play is a self-proclaimed ‘servant of the king’ but when he hears three witches’ prophecy that he is going to be king, his loyalties seem to flip. In his greed, he ends up murdering the current King of Scotland – King Duncan.
Macbeth is one of the most important characters in the story “Macbeth”. The name “Macbeth” means ‘son of life’ in Gaelic. He is a scottish general and the thane of Glamis. In the beginning of the play, he is shown as a brave soldier and a powerful man by showing his military achievements such as by destroying and having victory over the rebel Macdonwald and Cawdor. Macbeth fights with a great courage and violence in the battle and receives the thane of Cawdor.

Although the character originallywanted to rule peacefully, his lust for power and advancement practically devoured his wantfor peace. His need for power and superiority are what led to his killing streak and,ultimately, his downfall. It is also shown throughoutthe play that Macbeth's mental statewasn’t necessarily that of a sane and stable person.

They started out good, heroic even. But spiraled into evilness as the story went on. Although some might claim human nature is good, examples from Lord of the Flies and Macbeth support scientists’ claims that human beings are naturally evil.
Macbeth’s mental condition begins to dwindle as time goes on, starting with the murder of Duncan. At first, Macbeth is seen as a soldier that everyone aspires to be, strong, brave, and compassionate about his duties to the king. In act one scene two, Captain says, “...For brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name-...” This shows that he is a likeable person who has only the objective of serving his king. After meeting with the witches and hearing his prophecy, Macbeth starts to think about what it would be like to be king of Scotland.

Just like when Macbeth kills Duncan, Ross and an old man converse about unnatural, strange things happening, which seem to coincide with what Macbeth did. One example that shakespeare shows that if you do something unnatural, or an act of evilness, you will get harmed in return is when After the murder of Duncan, Macbeth struggles terribly with his guilt. He worries that he could not pronounce the holy word, "Amen," when one of Duncan's chamberlains said, "God bless us" (2.2.39, 2.2.40). Later, he hears a voice cry out that he will never be able to sleep peacefully again because he murdered Duncan while he was asleep and powerless.
