“Carroll (1991) organized different corporate social responsibilities as a four-layered pyramid model and called it the pyramid of responsibilities. The four different responsibilities - economical, legal, ethical and philanthropic are the layers of the pyramid” (Guliyev, 2014). This pyramid describes Whole Foods, the social aspect that organizations are not built on just maximizing profits but also by aiding society by assisting their customers, suppliers, employees and communities. Studying this pyramid, I can’t place Whole Foods on just one level, after reading the lesson several times it appears that each level describes Whole Food’s organization. Whole Foods does not focus or operate on one level they not only make sure their stakeholders are happy but their customers, employees, suppliers and community as well. Whole Foods is a collective business that strives to win. The pyramid has four layers the bottom layer is Economic responsibility which means to produce profits, the organization must do right by global capitalism. “According to Whole Foods website they reach out nationally and globally by providing microcredit loans to help countries that are see trying to develop and grow” (Values matter, (n.d.)).
The second layer is Legal Responsibility obeying the law. One of Whole Foods rule is to abide by laws and to factor them into business decisions. Next level is Ethical Responsibility being ethical plays a significant role in any organization because you don’t have to be ethical, but it’s expected. Whole Foods strive to be ethical furthermore, it made World’s Most Ethical Companies list 4 times. The first layer is Philanthropic Responsibility “be a good global corporate citizen doing what is desired by global stakeholders (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013 pg. 21).
