There are fifty-two weeks in a year. Of those fifty-two weeks, forty-seven are used for work and only five can be used to rest, relax, and recharge. What happens after those five weeks? The only thing left is to return to work at the same monotonous job as before. It seems like those five weeks should be used to their fullest extent, but they often are not. I have heard family members complain, countless times, that they do not want to use their paid time off. Whenever they try to explain why, all they can give me is a long, drawn out shrug. This has left me pondering. As a student, vacations have always been important to me. A nice, long break can create time for me to rest and focus so that not even the minutest detail can get passed me. As a student I am guaranteed time off year around so that I can relax and overcome the stress that school causes. Most workers, like my mother, work hours that are far longer than the time I spend in school. Considering this, what is stopping the government from guaranteeing a certain number of paid time days off to employees?

In the article Cane, attempts to establish the importance of vacations and what stops people from taking them. Her focus was the same as Dickey’s, but she paid more attention to psychological and personal reasons. She pointed out that CEOs, like Cheryl Ross, were surprised by how much paid time off goes unused. Kane attributes this to people trying to save paid time off for sick days, families having difficulty lining up their schedule and a work environment that is hostile to employees that use all their time off. She then goes on to detail a startup called Stayful that is trying to remedy the problem.
