Recommended: Education the pathway to success
Author Jeffrey Selingo states in his article “What’s the Purpose of College: A job or an Education?” college prices are increasing traumatically and yet college graduates are left without a career or job. Before the 1970’s college was a place where post high school graduates could go to explore various majors and courses. However, that has changed, after the 1970’s students would enter college already knowing the outcome of a career they had already chosen. Most students are now majoring in business, unlike in the past, when most were graduating with a major in traditional arts and science fields.
The need for acquiring a college degree has always been a difficult decision for students. Oftentimes the thought of attending college is seen as a requirement to enter the higher class in the United States. It has become common to think that recipients of a college education will end up making more money than the people who do not receive post-secondary education. The choice of whether or not to attend college has been pondered in the minds of adolescents. The amount of money that people make weighs heavily on whether or not they attend college right after high school.
We as a society are manipulated by the idea that a college education will fix all of our problems and allow us to pursue a successful life. In the essay “College In America” by Caroline Bird mentions that a college education is not the best choice for all high school graduates because it leads to the assumption that a college education is the only possible way to establish one’s identity in society. Although college is the staple after graduating high school not all sustain the qualities it takes to succeed in the intellectual work given and some career fields do not have a connecting relationship to a college education reminding us that even though these claims are based in the 1970s it is still relevant in today’s society.
Throughout the essay, Charles Murray stresses the idea that college is the wonderland of finding oneself and to find the career that one would want to follow for the rest of their lives. “College is seen as the open sesame to a good job and a desirable way for adolescents to transition to adulthood. Neither reason is as persuasive as it first appears.” Murray, C (2008) Practically spoken, this is not normally the case. College is a fair amount of work, much more work than one would normally acquire through any course of a high school or secondary school setting.
What’s on the mind of most high school seniors throughout their final year of high school? For most its college, and many of those students do not have a clue about what they are about to get themselves into. In today’s society, a college education is a vital step in getting yourself into a good career. But one author argues otherwise. Pharinet the author of the essay “Is college for Everyone” states that college is not for everyone and you do not need college to be successful in society.
College graduates have better job security and more job opportunities, which means they are more likely to have stable employment and earn a higher salary. A Look into The Purpose Of College When thinking about the purpose of college, most people tend to lean towards either job-driven or life-driven. In the article “What’s The Purpose Of College?”, Brandon Busteed looks deeper into the meaning of the purpose of college. Instead of looking at college as solely preparation for a good job, we can also look at it as a way to prepare a person for a successful life through broad education. After reading this article, I agree with the author that the purpose of college is equally preparing students for jobs while also assisting them in ways to thrive throughout their life to be successful with a purpose. (Berger, 2013)Another idea regarding success focuses on a relationship. Relationships success involves spending time with friends and family and being surrounded. College education can assist in achieving some types of achievement. (Berger, 2013)However, it makes little or no difference whether the individual is successful or not in other life areas. Some professions such as medicine, law, engineering and teaching require college education.
Many students sometimes just leave out of high school and don’t even bother going to college due to the amount of time they think is going to be wasted. College does take a lot of time from a person’s day rather it be with being in class or doing homework , but the end result of it all is well worth it . Being able to spend all this time and money for college can be stressful, sometimes even difficult but being able to finish and get a diploma will prove theater hard work pays off. Although finding a job after college can sometimes be the most stressful thing to do it will all turn out for the better. Many times some people can’t find a job in the city or state they currently live in but other places may have the dream job they’ve been looking for since leaving college.
A rising issue in today’s society is deciding whether or not college is worth the cost. There is an extreme amount of pressure that is forced upon high school students by parents, teachers, and peers to further their education and attend college. However, there is research that challenges the thought that college is the best possible path for a person to take. College may be a great investment for some people, but it is not meant for everyone. This is supported by the arguments that colleges are expensive, jobs do not always require a college degree, and students are forced to choose a lifestyle before being exposed to the real world.
Is College Really Worth it? Many college graduates are currently unemployed, which has left many parents wondering, is college really worth it? Some parents believe that college prepares students for more than a job or career, and others don’t think it’s worth the cost. Recent studies have shown that new college students are losing ground on wages by the time they graduate, higher education is becoming a risky investment, and most students are better off developing their own “lower-risk” business.
High school graduates are starting to feel that they must go to college. Students are consistently being bombarded with different ideas of what to do after high school, most of which require some type of schooling or degree. Instructors and counselors commonly persuade students to think that we only have one option to be successful with a college degree. College might not be for everyone! From my research, I found many articles on reasons why people go to college, reasons they do not go to college, and statistics on going and not going to college.
