Additionally, the witches are a form of mystery as their power is unknown: “Tell me, thou unknown power-” (Act 4, Scene 1, Line 68) Additionally, more of this mystery and fear is shown when they show Macbeth the apparitions of the kings: “Thy crown does sear mine eyeballs.” (Act 4, Scene 1, Line 112) In this quote, Macbeth feels pain from looking upon the apparitions. Moreover, this mystery and power relates to the Greek fates as they seem to have unknown bounds to their power: “But even Zeus was afraid of those girls.” (PJ)
In fact, Macbeth becomes fascinated by them, "would they had stayed." Banquo serves as his conscience, perhaps representing the period audience who would have also thought the witches to be evil and unnatural, and warns him of the dangers of trusting such supernatural messengers; a warning that goes unheeded. After hearing the prophecy, Macbeth already thinks about, "murder," and becomes preoccupied with thoughts of becoming king showing the powerful hold they have over him with only one meeting, scaring the audience who would have believed in Witches. Macbeth believes the Witches as there first prophecy came true and ignores the fact that they’re evil beings whereas Banquo recognizes them for what they are. He even informs his most beloved, Lady Macbeth, who also shares his ambition.
The witches catch Macbeth at the opportune moment: when he is returning from battle and filled with pride from all the kills he made. They look exactly how you would expect witches to look: in tattered robes, unruly hair and speaking in riddles. Shakespeare most likely also added a supernatural element as King James I was said to have a significant interest in the subject. The witches also represent pure, unaltered evil as back in the Jacobean era they were associated with Satan. Wherever they go, there is thunder and lightning which signals a storm is coming; this foreshadows something dark and ominous.
For centuries , witches have been stoned to death and burned alive simply for being able to create magic . The notion of witches have been a taboo subject that most people would try to avoid but William Shakespeare did not make their reputation any better by depicting them as malicious and demonic in his famous play ‘ Macbeth’ which a lot of people tried making movies of . Despite bearing some similarities between the three videos in which the witches were in , the differences are profound . To start with , there are quite some similarities between the witches in the three movies . In George Wright’s , Rupert Goold’s , and Kurzel’s movies , all of the witches seemed to say the same lines , despite them being from different timelines .
In the play, Macbeth by William Shakespeare, there is a lot of supernatural activity involving three main Witches. There are many theories proposing that Lady Macbeth is the fourth Witch, but there is also the stance that she is not. Lady Macbeth is not the fourth Witch because she does not share the same characteristics that the Witches portray in the play. First of all, the Witches do not show regret, while Lady Macbeth does. The Witches also reveal supernatural powers throughout various parts of the play, while Lady Macbeth does not.
Supernatural elements can be seen in Macbeth through the witches and their unusual powers. The witches appear to be helpful in giving Macbeth his prophecy, but in reality want only to stir up trouble and cause strife throughout the kingdom. Although Macbeth wants the witches to tell him his prophecy, he is also afraid to act on these newly found predictions for fear of the inevitable guilt he will then have to face. Macbeth states that the witches as "Instruments of darkness" in order to explain to readers that even though the witches appear to be helping Macbeth, in reality they are causing more harm than good and creating evil thoughts within the characters minds. Macbeth’s prophecy began his desire for power, which led to his struggle with guilt.
Throughout the play, the witches have a strong influence on many characters. MacBeth listens to their prophecies and tries to pursue ultimate power because of them. The witches are an example of supernatural beings and change in natural order of events. The witches prophecies were seen as concrete and not able to be altered, so by MacBeth trying to usurp and affect his future, he reaps the poor consequences of his actions. The witches are stronger and more powerful than MacBeth because they have all-power and the ability to forever alter the course of someone’s life.
Lady Macbeth is truly an evil character. In the beginning of the play, it tells how much Macbeth is a fierce warrior, but coming home the witches came. As soon as Lady Macbeth heard about the prophecy, she becomes the fierce warrior and Macbeth bends to her every whim. Lady Macbeth is always making Macbeth feel awful, (Act 3, scene V, line 58) “Are you a man?”.
Influence of Witchcraft In Shakespeare’s day witches were not merely a novelty character brought out as a joke around Halloween. It was widely believed that witches were real and that they possessed powers that were considered to be of the devil. This belief in witchcraft eventually led to a widespread panic that was followed by the persecution of witches. Due to this belief in witchcraft at the time Macbeth was written and performed; the tone was already set. Shakespeare used this fear to create suspense within the play and it led to the involvement of the weird sisters and the crazed actions committed by Macbeth and his wife.
In the play Macbeth by Shakespere the main character Macbeth goes through many changes and ends up being an almost completely different person by the end. The two main Influences that attribute to corrupting him are Lady Macbeth and the witches. Lady Macbeth manipulates him using negative reinforcement, while the witches simply plant a thought and watch it overtake him.
In the book Shakespeare 's Macbeth, I predicted that the 3 witches would act out the scene the same way in the film, and they did. When the witches were plotting on ways to overcome Macbeth, the back round setting was dark , grey, and it seemed like evil things were about to happen. "Fair is foul and foul is fair. ' ' ' ' Hover through the fog and filthy air. '
The two main characters in this scene are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Macbeth was seen as a noble and well mannered gentleman who is strong on the field and a loyal soldier in the beginning of the play . He then met the three witches who sabotaged his mind and made him believe he would be king.
William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, the main character; Macbeth, is seen as an evil character. The play is based off of Macbeth’s decisions and his actions to become King. In the beginning Macbeth starts out as a hero in Scotland’s war with Ireland and towards the end he is transformed into a murderer. Macbeth is not wholly evil because of is heroism in the war, his love for Scotland, and because he didn’t want to kill King Duncan initially. Macbeth was brain washed by his wife and tricked into killing the King.
The extravagant King Louis XVI creates an absolute monarchy, but the French Revolution kills him with a guillotine. Napoleon Bonaparte invades one European country to the next with ease, but he faces defeat in the Battle of Waterloo. Adolf Hitler strives to create the perfect Aryan race in Europe with a strong German army and fascist ideals, but he loses the Second World War due to overconfidence and misleading advisors. The Soviet Union competes with America in nuclear weapons, space programs, and sphere of influence as a superpower, yet the menacing empire topples down because of a stagnant economy and abuse of power. Macbeth, a valiant thane in Scotland, meets his disgrace through irrational characters.
One event that is significant is when the witches meet Macbeth. They tell him that he will be Thane of Cawdor then be King of Scotland. The witches also tell Banquo that his children will rule a line of many kings. From the moment Macbeth becomes aware of these prophesies, the seeds of ambition, pride, and murder are all planted into Macbeth’s mind. He begins formulating strategies quickly in order to become king after he has received the title Thane of Cawdor.
