It sometimes makes me feel that their life is perfect when it is not.” (Girl, age 15)” Rather than having and showing your true life you show what you think people want to see. Because of this everyone is brought into this false belief that everyone’s life in this day and age is much better than back then when it is in some aspects and not others. Especially since people can even edit themselves on social media to be seemingly the best.
Social media platforms like Tiktok, Instagram and twitter all create an algorithm that is used to influence our perceptions on everything whether that be politics, fashion influence etc we are all somewhat pons on conformity. We are heavily influenced to the point where nothing can be deemed as “original”, we’ve all got the same ideas, opinions , morals etc. Not only are we lacking individualism, authenticity is something that is seen in such a negative light. No one ever wants to hear about the latest “bad” news in the world. The real and raw truth is hidden and pushed to the side to give us this happy perception but that’s simply just not real.
Women and men are photoshopped and people on social media post photos that portray their lives as anything less than perfect. This has caused men (and women) to assume that women look like the photoshopped models in their social media feed and they are disappointed when women in real life do not meet this impossible standard. Furthermore, people become envious when they see how fun or exciting other people’s “perfect” lives look on social media. They feel if they are not living a life full of parties, exciting adventures, and sex, then they are missing out on living the perfect life. These people feel like they are not worth anything because compared to everyone else’s perfect social media life, their life is not worth living.
Kyla Buchanan Reading 12-15-16 Period:8 Compare and Contrast Jonas”s dystopian society was irregular and judgemental. In this essay I’m going to compare and contrast his dystopian society with modern day. There are many ways they were alike and different in the text. In the first paragraph, I’m going to contrast Jonas’s society with modern day. Then, In the second paragraph I’m going to contrast modern day with Jonas’s.
The well-known author Elie Wiesel’s dystopian society presents a world in which there is no rightness in anything with people being treated as if not humans and they soon become dehumanized while living in worst-case scenarios. The society is an illusion to a perfect utopian world to the offenders but to the others they are literally living in their worst nightmare. The Nazi supremacy is rising and they have a merciless hatred towards Jews. Elie Wiesel witnessed many horrific events and was ripped from his normal life when he was taken from his home and everyday routine by the Nazi Germans in 1944 just because of his religion, Judaism. He may have been a Jew before the events but after everything that occurred his faith became severely wounded
In her article titled The Flip Side Of Internet Fame, Jessica Bennett focuses on how social media is a place that’s full of hysteria. Bennett says, “Online there are few checks and hardly any monitoring. Moreover, studies show that the anonymity of the net encourages people to say things they normally wouldn’t.” In an attempt to fit in, many take the side of the most common posted opinion even if extremely vulgar or offensive, which can send a large group of people in the same state of fury. These incidents on the internet can have a more hysteric effect, entire cities, states, and countries have felt endangered over a post on a website.
Due to the fast pace of mass media, and how fast trends change, no one is given the chance to be themselves. People aren’t given a single moment to question if they are contributing anything meaningful to the world. Society is so caught up in being just like celebrities and influencers, that they completely lose themselves in it. This generation suffers from the want to be like everyone else, and we are left with nothing unique and nothing different. The change in fashion, music, and even language, leads to an even greater desire to be the same.
“Stuff your eyes with wonder, he said, live as if you 'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It 's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. ”(Bradbury 82).
Government in a dystopia is never perfect. When a government becomes too controlling, and the people can 't stop them, a dystopia is inescapable. In Divergent, some of the simplest things in everyday life are controlled by the faction’s rules. The government seems to have taken over fairly quickly. Examples of an over controlling government are shown on just the first page of the book.
Duality. The Unseen Side of Everything. Many people can agree with the fact that society can be a controlling, manipulative beast. It’s hand persistently reaches out and drags unsuspecting victims into depths known as conformity. Over time, many people develop masks of their own to hide from this beast and to be seen as a typical and average person.
With all the recent political nonsense that's been going on, there is been a lot of speculation regarding just what kind of horrible future the world is headed towards. Will we really live in a dystopian society like George Orwell presented in his novel in 1984. In my opinion, probably not But where's the fun in that? With all the talk of Russian medelling in the recent U.S. Presidential election Tension between nuclear powers is brewing.
In all countries, religions, and cultures people are expected to live a certain way. For instance in puritan times people were expected to wear plain concealing clothing, and were supposed to live their lives by the bible. For example in the book “ The Scarlet Letter” Hester Prynne was shunned from society for committing adultery. In many ways people let society control who they are.
This, in turn, does the opposite of what social media were intended to do. Instead of allowing the expression of unaltered and original ideas, it is a platform of suppressed individualism which only encourages mainstream concepts. Conformity is seen everywhere, society encourages it. Social Media, News Broadcasters, and the FCC are all examples of underlying ways the top one percent can monitor and manipulate the ways people live their lives. Most people are controlled by others around them; posts on social media
What is the difference between a dystopian society to our society? How about the similarities between the two societies? There are definitely many discernible unorthodoxness in a dystopian society versus the “real world” like the fact, that a dystopian society is more grotesque, to the point that it’s boring. On the other hand, there are plenty enough similarities like, how both societies strive for better, a utopia. In other words, dystopia compared to society, more specifically dystopian society, education systems, rules/laws, and family between our society’s education systems, rules/laws, and family, is substantially different, but there are some associations that could be made.
Today everyone is obsessed with social media. People are easily influenced by almost everything they come across on the internet including appearance and body image. In todays generation it is so common to be unhappy with the way you look. All this is due to societies high standards on the way we “should” look. With social media you can do many things, including pretending to be someone you are not.
