The 30, The 20, The 10, an 11 year old athlete just scored a touchdown with all his friends and family watching everyone is proud including himself. But then he takes the field again in the second half and he gets hit really hard and it looks like it hurt. Then you as a parent start to wonder, are youth sports too intense? That is a very debatable subject some people think youth sports are fine the way they are and others think that they are getting too intense or already are because of the young people getting hurt. However youth sports aren’t too intense, in order to be good as you get older you are gonna have to take some risks and be willing to train. According to the New York Time Upfront article the critics say that,” Half of all sports injuries among kids each year are caused by simple overuse … These injuries-- stress fracture,ruptured ligaments, and growth plate injuries. ” (Hyman and Pitcock).But all those things don’t just happen immediately ,they happen when you do something repeatedly for a long time.So if you wanted to help stop that make your kid rest for a little bit maybe like take a rest day one or more times a week so that way your sure your kid will not get hurt that way. For the other physical risks it has, the article from New York Times upfront shows supporters saying,”No sport or physical activity is risk-free.” (Buzz Bissinger and Scott Hallenbeck).Somethings are out of our control like some of the physical risk, but we are trying to help prevent them.You could get hurt from walking down the stairs in the morning but what are you gonna do just never walk down the stairs?Yes, there are physical risks when playing sports; on the other hand ,you can get hurt doing pretty much anything else. The most common injury that parents are scared about are concussions. If they are really scared about letting their kids play sports because of the risks of concussion then they should be scared to let them do a lot of daily activities. A way that sports can give you self confidence is that when you're playing a sport everyone is cheering for you and when you do a good job you feel good about yourself.The New York Times Upfront magazine says, “ When an athlete performs well as a result of this kind of disciplined training, he or she develops genuine self-confidence.”( Mark Hyman and Nathan Pitcock). It really does too because the reason why most children are playing is for fun and it’s always the most fun when you're winning or doing good, it makes you feel good.Another example is if you do so good in a sport that you are looking to be recruited to college. The USA Today says, “Talent is being identified and sometimes even offered as early as 8th and 9th grade.”(Nancy Armour). Imagine bringing scouted by college teams wanting you when you're only in 8th or 9th grade. That would boost your confidence level by a lot. Now lastly in the magazine The American it shows, “After controlling for factors such as age, educational attainment, and income, they found that athletes are 15 percent more likely to be registered to vote, 14 percent more likely to watch the news, and 8 percent more likely to feel comfortable speaking in public.”(Scott Ganz and Kevin Hassett).
