To Kill a Mockingbird, The Diary of Anne Frank, Lord of the Flies, and 1984 are just a tiny fraction of the banned books list which increases significantly every year. Whether it is being banned from schools, public libraries, book stores, and other places people receive their reading sources from, this is censorship. According to the American Library Association (ALA) there were at least 311 books in 2014 banned. ALA estimates that 70 to 80 percent are never even reported. The main reasons to why banning books started was because of the use of racial issues, sexual situations, and violence. But now books are being banned because of “damaging” lifestyles, presence of witchcraft, unpopular views on religion, political bias, and more.

Some children books are being banned because of parents’ disapproval of a certain word or image. According to Barnesandnoble examples of books that are banned in America because of parents wanting to protect their kids are “The Adventure of Captain Underpants,” “Junie B. Jones,” “Where’s Waldo,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and even “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” The reasons are completely ludicrous. “The Adventure of Captain Underpants” was banned because of the word nipple. “Junie B. People are essentially banning books to keeps writers’ creativity from young minds. As more and more books are being banned from the school curriculum students are unable to explore different ideas and thoughts to develop creativity. Students will lack the element of imagination by not having books spark that trait.
