Alliances were the cause for World War 1 because they increased tensions between European countries. Alliances also created an environment where one conflict could engulf an entire continent and cause lots of tension. In the late 19th century, a German chancellor named Otto von Bismarck forged a system of alliances with neighboring countries to isolate France. He believed the countries still wanted revenge for the loss of Alsace-Lorraine during the Franco-Prussian War. Bismarck formed the triple alliance which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.
