The photo of Europe in World War 1 shows the alliance systems (Document 2.) Because Austria-Hungary had protection from Germany and Italy, they were forced to fight Russia, France, and Great Britain even though those countries had nothing to do with each other. This created the domino effect, as alliance after alliance, the war grew. To conclude, militarism, alliances, and nationalism were the main causes that led to World War 1. Militarism was the increase in the military with the industrial revolution.
During the years that led up to World War 1, many factors took place that potentially caused the war to occur, especially in the continent of Europe. In the Balkan peninsula, a belief called nationalism caused lots of chaos and tension between the nations (OI). Prideful Balkan countries would battle amongst themselves to prove their dominance as a culture. On top of this, countries formed alliances, creating an intricate alliance system that stretched throughout most of 20th century Europe
Prior World War I Europe had a long term of peace with in the countries. Lots of imperialism was happening at the time. Most of the European countries had colonies around the world. Although most of the countries were threatened by each other due to the amount of colonies each country had. In attempts to show their superiority over its surrounding countries Germany decided to build up their army, causing the surrounding counties to mimic Germany's actions The European countries where frighten by each other leading to the creation of alliances more specifically the Triple Alliance consisting of Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary and the Triple Entente containing Russia, France, and Great Britain.
World War I was caused by the flawed alliance system between the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria, and Italy) and the Triple Entente (Britain, France, and Russia). The people’s nationalistic feelings fueled the war because they did not want their country’s image ruined. In Europe, the nations had an uneven division of colonies which caused a desire to weaken other countries through a world war.
World War 1 Causes There were lots of countries in Europe whose militaries were getting bigger and stronger. There were many people who were proud of their country and wanted to protect it. Also bigger countries wanted more so they tried to take from smaller and less strong countries. Next, countries worked together to be stronger but if one country had a problem with another then all the other countries would get involved. The main causes of World War I were strengthening of the military, loyalty to a country, era of conquering, and partnerships between countries.
Although the direct cause of WW1 is seen to be the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on the 28th of June 1914, the four main factors of World War 1 were militarism, alliances, imperialism and nationalism. Great Britain had a large navy and Germany wanted to have a large navy as well. This resulted in Germany and France competing to build a larger army and between 1870 and 1914 all major powers, apart from Great Britain and United States, doubled the size of their army. Alliances within Europe were meant to promote peace and were seen as a reason to not engage in war however a single argument between two countries (Austria-Hungary and Serbia) meant that all allied nations were required to join the fight, this is exactly what happened
Alliances had been put in place in order to balance power and prevent a world war to ever happen. Alas, the conflict between Austria-Hungary and Serbia was not prevented at all. The conflict was what pushed forward the war and caused countries to call for more alliances. This had gotten more and more nations involved in what started as a small conflict to a war. Countries started declaring war on eachother until it was, what some might call, a bar fight.
Document A ‘‘European Alliances, 1914’’ shows us the different types of alliances that nations had with each other. Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy were known as the Triple Alliance. There was also the Triple Entente, an alliance between France, Great Britain and Russia. Alliances helped cause the war because nations would be against each other and they would also want to be dominant. Although there were many reasons that caused World War I, Militarism, Imperialism, and Allies were the main factors.
European powers moved to form alliances to protect their territories and to maintain their interests (doc 1). There were two main alliances made: the Triple Alliance, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, and the Triple Entente, which included Russia, France, and Britain. These alliance systems brought on the war, as Germany’s rise in power threatened France and England, which both wanted to stop Germany from becoming too powerful. France had suffered a crushing defeat at the hand of Germany in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 and had lost Alsace-Lorraine. France wanted to stop Germany’s rising power in Europe and abroad.
“Cleo! How dare you did that to me! You promised that you wouldn’t tell anyone!,” Atlanta shouted at Cleo, “even though you’re my best friend, this is unacceptable. I will punish you for this”. Using his power, Atlanta took away Cleo’s big wings and speech, so he could not fly and talk anymore.
Most alliances were signed in private and not all details were told to the public. The secretive nature caused other countries to be suspicious. As the large nations banded together in many different alliances for different reasons, they built relationships and gained resources needed to go to war. Alliances were a major reason the war became bigger. If there hadn’t been alliances, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand would have only cause a war between Serbia and Austria-Hungary.
I feel that the leading cause of world war one was the defense alliances. The war did start as an isolated event, and I’m not saying the only reason the world war started was due to the alliances. There was a large part of nationalism on the side of the Russians but I’ll get to that later. The initial conflict was not between the 9 countries that were the major contributors in the war but between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, even though Germany was hit with the blame of starting the war. Before the Great War began, there were countries that would go to another country and sign a treaty stating that if one country went to war or was attacked, the other would step in to defend them.
The First World War began in 1914 with the assassination of the Austrian Archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife on 28th June 1914 by the Bosnian revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip. This event started the outbreak of hatred and conflict between the Allied Forces and the Central Powers in addition to the different factors causing the start of World War One. Before the war started, many alliances were made between different countries to ensure that they felt protected and were safe from the threat of war but this led to major armament, land expansion and large country morale. The countries were very confident in the lead up to the Great War and people were strong that their country would win or be victorious during an attack or defense as the countries
They as well started to prepare their army, and soon all of Europe was at war. If these large alliances were not formed, two countries would have been fighting their own war, instead of causing a world war. Nationalism helped create these alliances, each country thought they we’re better than each other, this created huge amounts of distrust. To better protect their interests, and to have more security, they joined each other into an alliance
In the late 19th century “The European leaders believed that by creating a balance of power they could prevent such horror. This idea was that if all the counties had balanced strengths that nobody could dominate the rest. There was a wide-spread of wars due to the sharing of the boarders. The triple alliance was fought in France and in Russia. It was the war that started all the Alliances.
