The Peloponnesian War is considered one of the most important wars in ancient Greek history, which took place between Athens and its allies in the Delian Union and the allies of Sparta in the Peloponnesian Alliance, and it was one of the most prominent conflicts that Athens faced in ancient Greece, which lasted from 431 BC to 404 BC
Yes, it can be said that Athens was unable to deal effectively with the Peloponnesian War for several reasons:
1. The weakness of the ground forces:
Athens relied mainly on its naval power, while Sparta's power lay in its land armies centered around maintaining territory. This led to the inability of the Athenian forces to fight decisive battles against the forces of Sparta.

Most of these campaigns failed in Athens, and it lost its large military forces in the Sicilian campaign in 413 BC.
4. The Thirty Tyrants Coup:
After the end of the war, Athens was ruled by the government of the Thirty Tyrants who were loyal to Sparta. This coup caused political and economic turmoil in the city and the decline of the political and economic influence of Athens.
5. The weakness of the Athenian alliance: Despite the Delian Union of Athens, it had difficulty establishing effective cooperation with its allies. Some member states of the Union were not committed to confronting Sparta and providing the required support, which affected the overall military capacity of Athens.

It cannot be said that democracy in Athens was overthrown directly after the Peloponnesian War. However, the war and its aftermath led to a deterioration of the democratic situation in Athens and negative effects on democratic governance.
This war led to the weakness and collapse of Athens' political and maritime influence in the Mediterranean. Sparta and her allies won the war, and the war led to widespread destruction and ruin in many Greek cities, including Athens
