George had to kill Lennie, unless he wanted Curley to get to Lennie. Lennie was in imminent danger
George made the right decision to kill Lennie because they were best friends and it would hurt George even more if he had to know someone else did it. For example when Carlson killed Candy’s
Curley probably wouldn’t have let him get away, and once he found him, he would have made sure he died the most painful death possible. George made sure to kill Lennie in the least painful way he could. He had him look away and then shot him in the back of the head while telling him the story about how they’re going to live in a nice house, and he can tend the rabbits.
If George didn’t kill Lennie, then he would have to die in a suffering way. Meaning, Lennie dying in the hands of Curley would be suffering. Since George accidentally killed Curley's wife there was no other way to save him. Even if both of them do escape, Lennie would never safe and both of them would still be hunted down. Lennie would have to die either way and George loved Lennie too much to let him die within the hands of Curley.
In the book “Of Mice and Men” there are two main characters, Lennie and George. Lennie is dumb while George is average intelligence and likes to think ahead. Lennie is so dumb that he gets in these stupid situations, whether it be killing someone by shaking his hand too hard, or touching a dress and the girl calls it rape. Lennie can not live a normal life, he would be unhappy to never get his dream or what he wants. George killing Lennie seemed like the right thing to do.
However, in this particular situation, I believe that George 's decision to kill Lennie was acceptable due to the fact that it would have been easier for Lennie to die from George then having Curley
In John Steinbeck’s novel “Of Mice and Men” two men are trying to find a temporary job so that they can move out to a little farm by themselves. They stay at a ranch for a while to work and save enough money so they are able to move out to the ranch, but then Lennie strangles and kills one of the ranch-workers wifes. Lennie runs away from the ranch so they can’t find him and George winds up having to kill Lennie, himself. The first reason George decided to kill Lennie was because in their old town “Weed” Lennie had touched and ripped a girl's dress and she started screaming and acting like she was being “raped” and she ran to all of the men to tell them what had happened and George and Lennie had to run until they got out of trouble and they
George killed Lennie for Lennie's better interest, he started with a mouse, then a puppy and then he killed Curley’s wife, who knows what he would have done next. He would have gone to prison either way, and if he had killed again then he would have either gone to prison or been killed by another person like Curley wanted to
Another reason is the ranchers would’ve killed him no matter what so this way George ensured it was fast and painless. On the other hand, this was condemned because George had been saying how his life would be so much better without Lennie and this allowed him to be able to live that life. George's decision to kill Lennie was justified because Lennie was going to be killed no matter what. After all of the ranchers find out that Lennie killed Curley’s wife, Curley states that he is going to kill Lennie, "I'm gonna get him.
George's justification for shooting Lennie is to keep him from experiencing the pain that will follow the consequences of his actions. Lennie is going to be lynched, seemingly beaten up, furthermore Curley is going to kill Lennie. George also perceives that even if they were to escape, it would be just a matter of time before Lennie has another "accident" and kills someone else. George knows he can't protect Lennie from society, as he also cannot protect society from Lennie. Killing Lennie before he is caught is the only kind thing to do.
The main reason George killed Lennie is because Lennie would have killed somebody again. And the evidence is clearly there, the pet mice that he killed, the poor puppy that he accidently hit to hard, and especially Curley’s wife. He almost killed the girl in weed if he had gone any further. The sad thing is is that he doesn't know how strong he really is, nor does he know what he’s done wrong in the first place.
George killed Lennie out of love because he knew Lennie would suffer if he lived longer. Even though the action was bad, George decided it was best to kill Lennie to protect him. He knew that if Lennie was still alive, he would suffer greatly for two reasons: Curley wanted to avenge his wife and eventually Lennie would be sent to jail. If Lennie stayed alive, then Curley would have taken him and tortured him through immense amounts of pain for a long period of time. In addition, Lennie would theoretically have been sent to jail because he would be accused of rape and
Lennie with his simple mind, always gets into trouble. This time, Lennie gets himself in a bind once again, that George can’t save him from. George decision to kill Lennie in the story, was due to his responsibility, sympathy, and love for Lennie. George’s decision to kill Lennie was out of sympathy for him.
That George got rid of the burden that Lennie was to him. On the other hand, George also knows what Lennie is capable of and knows what Lennie has done in the past. For example, the thing that happened in weed, “So he reaches out to feel this red dress an’ the girl lets out a squawk, and that gets Lennie all mixed up, and he holds on ‘cause that’s the only thing he can think to do” (Steinbeck 41). Lennie panics too much and just freaks people out, so George put Lennie out of his confusion. In the end, George murdering his friend was well justified.
And then about a year later when Lennie accidentally killed Curley’s wife, the whole farm was after him. George shot him in the temple of his head for a quick and painless death. Lennie had to be killed because he didn’t know his own strength. And he was too dumb to realize what he was doing. Also Curley and Carlson would’ve tortured Lennie and then killed
