Valley Forge- Dec. 19 1777-June 19 1778. Valley Forge was the a winter camp for the continental army. This winter was one of the toughest winters the army faced. They lacked enough food and supplies that they need most. Washington had the toughest job: keeping the army together.
As dawn approached, he and his army would attack Trenton with all the force that they had at the time. The author stated that Washington had thought the battle was already lost because they would lose the element of surprise as the weather slowed them down which was pushing them into the daylight. According to Fischer, Washington and his army arrived to Trenton at around seven-thirty in the morning. They succeeded in using the element of surprise and the weather helped the colonial army and they took Trenton.

In 1776 David McCullough perfectly illustrates how the American army was always on the edge of defeat during the year of 1776. The story was limited to only one year with little background information; this causes confusion. Those who do not have a good understanding of the American Revolution will have an especially difficult time deciphering what the book is describing.
After the revolution was beginning in 1775-1776, the middle years brought the Americans rebels the knowledge that their struggle for independence would not be a quick and simple war. The most fearfully enemy of George Washington in the war was General Cornwallis. Maybe, if Washington would have attacked Clinton’s army in New York, the finish of the war would have been not in his favor, but Rochambeau had another idea: take Cornwallis on Virginia’s Yorktown peninsula. Thus, for the first time in the long war, Washington saw the opportunity to use naval superiority to his advantage. They send a message by frigate to admiral de Grasse in the West Indies, acting autonomously; he made one of the momentous decisions of the war.
Washington 's greatest victory, however, came during the brutal winter of 1776-7 at Valley Forge. On Christmas night, George Washington quietly crossed the Delaware River with a force of 2,400 troops. They arrived at Trenton, New Jersey at dawn and surprised the garrison of 1,500 Hessians who were still recovering from a night of holiday celebrations and plenty
Through December 1777 to June 1778, George Washington led the Continental Army through winter camp. The Continental Army was an army of Patriot soldiers who fought against Britain. The Patriots hated Britain for their taxes and laws. So they went off to war. There was just one problem, they did not know how bad the conditions were going to be.
Not only did he care about his soldiers at valley forge but many other times he had too. For example, “On a Christmas night, in a blizzard,he lead his men across the ice-flecked Delaware river to Trenton,NJ, surprise a drunken hessian garrison and seizes Trenton at the time…etc.” (the document “Timeline of George Washington) The battle of Trenton was a very good to successful battle that George Washington and his soldiers had. Not only did they win this battle but he showed that he really cared about his men.
His men were in place on 12 October without General Cornwallis having any idea of the new position. Over the next two days American and allied forces bombarded redoubts nine and ten in order to weaken their defenses. On 14 October Washington initiated a plan to conduct a diversionary strike against Fusilier’s redoubt to allow a sneak attack against redoubts nine and ten. The successful plan allowed his men to occupy redoubts nine and ten with artillery and have Yorktown in range from three sides of artillery fire. For the next three days the British were annihilated by American and French artillery fire.
This battle took place after a demoralizing defeat at Long island. George Washington was forced to retreat all the way across New Jersey back in Pennsylvania. Due to the cold and harsh winter and the defeats in the previous wars, the Continental Army was one the verge of abandoning the rebellion act. Therefore George Washington needed to find something to build up the spirit in his troops. As such he then decides to cross back over the Delaware River and attack the Hessians (German hired troops) at Trenton, New Jersey.
George Washington grew up in a time when we were still owned by England. As he was growing up he learned English customs, they liked tea and had one ruler that had total control over the country. He worked on the farm and helped around the house all day. He helped Britain win the Ohio Valley, against the French. As he got older the Stopped helping Britain and started fighting for freedom.
There were farms and small stores in the area, but there was not enough food to feed all of the soldiers and many became desperate and attempted to steal food from the farmers and food stores. Washington ended up writing to Congress, saying subsistence in the best manner they can ... “I am now convinced, beyond a doubt that unless some great and capital change suddenly takes place… this army must inevitably be reduced to one or other of these three things. Starve, dissolve, or disperse, in order to obtain …” After letting Congress know this, General Washington received a message saying a large British group of troops was nearby (Allen 27).
Composed on vital ports and mountainous terrain, New Jersey was perfect for surprise attacks on enemies, hiding locations, and trade. In the Battle of Trenton, General George Washington lead a surprise attack on Christmas morning to capture and defeat Loyalist grounds. The success of attributes, such as stealthiness, regarding the attack can be credited by the terrain provided in New Jersey for the Americans to defeat their opponents. Washington formed his “detachments into two divisions one to March by the lower or River Road, the other by the upper or Pennington Road... As the Divisions had nearly the same distance to March, [he] ordered each of them, immediately upon forcing the out Guards, to push directly into the Town, that they might charge the Enemy before they had time to form”.
Soldiers that would endure the hardships and fight for the independence of themselves and their families were vital to America prevailing over the British. Returning to college was a big decision, one that was greatly affected by my trips around the world. I had been to Zimbabwe, Africa several times on short-term mission trips. We traveled to several orphanages, ministering to the children throughout Harare. My heart broke seeing their lack of care and love, but moving from one orphanage to the next throughout each day did not leave much time to connect and care for these children. Having been adopted myself, I had a huge heart to love these children as my adopted family had loved me.
