Iran has been studying nuclear technology since the 1950’s. There is no doubt that Iran has invested great interest in wanting nuclear energy for civilian use, however it does bring up a very logical question. Why did they build a nuclear power plant for civilian use underground? Why are they trying to keep their nuclear advances so secretive? There is obviously an underlying reason behind Iran’s true desire for nuclear energy that they do not want anyone to know about. Iran has the third largest oil reserves and the second largest gas reserves in the world. Many people would wonder why they have a need for nuclear power with this type of revenue. On December 8, 1953, President Eisenhower had a meeting with the United Nations General Assembly where he delivered his “Atoms for Peace” speech. This speech started the world on studying nuclear energy. According to an article by Ariana Rowberry, President Eisenhower said in his speech “…if a danger exists in the world, it is a danger shared by all; and equally, that if hope exists in the mind of one nation, that hope should be shared by all” (1). The Atoms for Peace provided technology and education for countries wanting a civilian nuclear program. The revolution started when Khomeini began smuggling cassettes into Iran where they were duplicated and distributed. Khomeini was living in Iraq at the time and later moved to France where he could conduct interviews with news crews more freely. The Shah left Iran in January 1979. He placed Shapour Bakhitar as the new prime minister. Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran on February 1, 1979. Shortly after, Bakhitar went into hiding. Iran became the Islamic Republic of Iran on April 1, 1979 and drafted a new constitution. Ayatollah Khomeini became the Supreme Leader of Iran and established a new government that is still in place
