The Islamic religion spread rapidly through trade, military conquest, political structure, and the overall appeal of the religion. Many of the early Islamic ideas originated from the prophet Muhammad in Saudi Arabia around the 600s. His teachings began in Mecca, a city between the crossroads of numerous trade centers (Scott). Mecca’s location became ideal for the expansion of Islam, as it could be spread by people along the trade routes. In the “Map of Byzantine and Persian Empires and Trade Routes in 570 C.E.” (Document A), it demonstrates how Mecca was in the center of several trade routes.
In a map created from various sources, it shows how the spread of Islam relates to the military campaigns (Doc C). The map shows how the empire started in the Arabian Peninsula, then as the military conquests spread on throughout the middle east, the empire also spread along with it. Well the world may never know but, the Muslims did. The expansion of the Islamic empire was a big time in history for the Muslims, it was their big breakthrough. The most important events that caused the expansion were the military, the treaty of Tudmir, and the granting of gifts. I think the most significant reason the Muslims had a big breakthrough and expanded was because the military.
An Arab judge wrote a book of Islamic law for the caliph. A caliph is a spiritual ruler, selected to lead the Muslim community. One of the laws in the book is,”To defend the lands of the Islam and to protect them from intrusion so that people may earn their livelihood and travel at will without danger to life or property”(Document E). Guaranteed protection for practicing Islam would appeal to more followers. Force contributed a broad amount of people to practice Islam.
With his newfound beliefs, Muhammad sought to teach others of his religion. The question at hand, however, is how did Islam spread so rapidly? Thankfully, it is clear that Islam was able to spread so quickly due to military force, trade, and appealing values. The first key factor of the spread of Islam was military force.
The Spread of Islamic Empire The Islamic empire had spread rapidly in its early years proved by sources. The Islamic empire expanded in many ways but an example is when Muslim empires took control of the eastern Roman Empire in 636 C.E. according to document A, “The Muslim gathered together”. By this it means, that Muslims stood together no matter what happened. An example is that in 713 CE a Muslim commander signed a treaty with forces invading the Christian king of the southern Spain.
On pages 222 is a map of the Muslim travel pattern over the Byzantine and Persian Empires. However, on page 283 there is a map of Islamic conquests over a short period. Both reveal the spread of Islamic religion went very fast with the amount of conquering taking place before 1500 AD. The main key factor was, "...admitting non-Arabs to the faith and about maintaining the cultural distinction between conquerors and conquered" (Morillo, p. 221) By keeping a distinct difference between the Muslim Arabs and non-Muslim Arabs was important.
After Muhammad’s death in 632 Islam started spreading very rapidly starting in Arabia. Islam was able to spread so quickly and over such a large area because they were very strong and stable and because it was so appealing to other people . The main reason Islam was able to spread so quickly is that there were many reasons to join. The second reason Islam spread so quickly over such a vast area is that they had a very strong military. The last reason Islam was able to spread so quickly over such a large area is that they had a very strong government that was supported by trade.
Why Did Islam Spread so Fast Beginning in the 7th century, in Mecca, Arabia, a prophet, named Muhammad had received a message from the archangel Gabriel on top of Mount Hira while meditating. Muhammad had spread the word of the one god, Allah. This started the spark of many followers. Leading to a mass of followers around the globe. The Middle East is a place that was the birthplace for many cultures and religions such as Christianity and Islam. As they expanded from this region, both of these religions had good impact on history. However, Christianity and Islam have their similarities in religious beliefs and their differences in expansion between the two religions. Within the time period c. 600 CE to 1250 CE and 1st century to 1000 CE Islam and Christianity began to spread around the world. The two religions spread socially and economically similar but politically different.
Islam spread so quickly because the Islamic people not only traded their religion. The Muslim army went to war to get more land and people to follow the Islamic faith. Many people started following the Islamic religion because it states to live a good life based on the verses from the Qur’an. Trade throughout Islam was pretty important because people who believed in the Islamic religion. They not only traded important spices and goods they also shared the Islamic religion.

Document C states, “Mecca came under Muslim control by 622, Baghdad by 632, Jerusalem by 661, and Saragossa by 661.” This shows that the armies conquered many cities very quickly. Much territory is conquered within 100 years.
