There are many possible reasons as to why Japan attacked the U.S in Pearl Harbor, to exact revenge on the U.S for providing them with fewer resources, out of fear of all of the giant U.S warships basically sitting in there backyard. It is safe to say that the main reason Japan attacked the U.S at Pearl Harbor is because they thought the U.S stood in the way of them invading the dutch east indies to gain important resources such as oil and rubber. Places such as the Dutch East Indies and Malaya had such a superabundance of oil and other essential untouched resources that Japan wanted to claim it as their own before anyone else could, they saw the U.S as a threat to this opportunity which in turn caused them to attack.
