In June of 1812, the Grand Army of France marched into Russia, at the height of the French Empire, which controlled much of Europe. Napoleon hoped for a quick victory, but this did not come. During much of Napoleon’s advance, the Russians retreated without a fight, destroying valuable crops along the way, therefore denying the French food. In addition, many French soldiers were at this point already deserting or dying of disease. After a costly victory in Borodino, Napoleon marched into Moscow on September 14th, only to see that it had been set aflame. Here Napoleon spent over a month waiting for a peace offer from the Czar.
