Rwanda: How the genocide happened In relation to the Holocaust and the tension in Rwanda, both show a history of violence due to genocide. Genocide, the deliberate, systematic killing of an entire people or nation are shown within both cultures. In reading about Rwanda and Holocaust, both explains the term of stratification. In Rwanda and Holocaust many were killed and brutalized. These violent acts can be a form of power. During 1994, between April and June, an estimated amount of 800,000 Rwandans were killed in the matter of 100 days. In Rwanda, there are two groups of people, the Tutsis and the Hutus. Well, in Rwanda the dominate group is the Hutus and the minority is Tutsis. These two ethnic groups remind me of the two groups in America, the Blacks and the Whites during slavery. Along with the Jews and the Nazi Germans. The Hutus and the Tutsis have ethnic tension. Even though the two groups are similar they have develop tension amongst each other. These two groups speak the same language, live within the same communities and have the same traditions. It’s a wonder to me that they are unable to get alone with each other. Taking a look back into history. The Belgians considered the Tutsis to be superior to the Hutus. With that knowledge the Tutsis ran with that idea of power. So over 20 years, the Tutsis had better jobs and better education. This led to a lot of resentment and hatred among the Hutus. In 1959, riots began to form and Tutsis were killed. Just as the Jews became the scapegoats. In 1962, the Belgium relinquished power and granted Rwanda independence, having the Hutus taking their place.
