They believed by training their young at such a young age that they would be the strongest military force there was. (Document H) School was very different for the children of Athens, they did not only educate them in military but in the arts. Life in sparta was different than athens because sparta had no interest in art,music and education. Everything was centered in sparta was focused on the military. My opinion strengths did not outweighed the weakness of sparta education and I will explain how the strength was the most important than caring the weakness of sparta education.
Because of this they created a military like society. Everything was controlled by their government. Sparta may have had weaknesses in their education but their were more positive than negative parts. The strengths of Spartan education did outweigh the weaknesses because they trained Spartan boys for war and battle, women were also trained, and Spartan babies, from birth, were expected to be healthy.
A strong military was a top priority in Sparta. At the age of seven the boys in Sparta were taken away to military training. At the age of thirty you would join the professional army and you could marry. Sparta had one of the best, and strongest armies in ancient
Sparta relied heavily on its military for economic growth. This created many weaknesses in its economy. First of all, Sparta relied on their slaves to produce goods. However, a resistance from the slaves or a movement could have caused a disruption.
This made it so they could control what they knew and who they looked up to. They were also not allowed to participate in government until they were 30. In document D it says that they weren't allowed to travel so they wouldn’t learn foreign and uncivil ways. This shows that the strengths do not outweigh the weaknesses because they were controlled and only taught the “Spartan” way.
Spartan males were taught that their main purpose in life is battle and they were trained for any type of fighting. Not only were they taught fighting, both they were taught how to read and write because education is important in any civilization. When
Sparta was very different from other poleis in Greek history. They did things their own way. There is not a lot to know about Sparta, but we do have a few ancient authors to shine some light on topic such as, Xenophon, Thrucydides, Plutarch, Tyrtaues, and Alcman. Sparta did have a very unquie social hierarchy, which no other Greek polis had. Also, the Spartans boys and girl’s upbringings were very different, in which it gave them a lead in being on of the most powerful cities in the Greek world.
The education of Sparta varied in strengths and in weaknesses. The Sparta’s were first located in southern Greece called the Peloponnese. In this colony, the Sparta’s only vision was bloodthirsty war and violence. At the age of seven, a young boy is removed from his family and is expected, from his 8th to his 21st year, become educated to a brutal military-like discipline. Therefore, regarding the education in Sparta, the weaknesses outweighed the strength because the Spartan’s didn’t value family morals, the basics of reading and writing were taught, and the upbringing of Spartan boys was cruel and painful.
Their education, like that of boys, was prescribed by the state, which also insisted that newly married woman cut their hair short, unlike adult Greek woman elsewhere. Thus Spartan women were not secluded or segregated, as were their Athenian counterparts.” (Strayer, 239). This shows that Sparta was a better city-state as it allowed its woman to interact with others. They allowed them to have a life.
Sparta is a city-state in Laconia, on the Peloponnese in Greece. Additionally, Sparta’s laws were made by a council of thirty elders which included the two kings. Also, the Spartans considered themselves to be direct descendants of the Greek hero Hercules. Though Sparta and Athens valued education, had slaves and both had monarchy and oligarchy, Sparta is far more superior because they are strong, Sparta gives girls a lot of freedom and women and men had equal rights.
Contrary to this, Sparta’s policy was all about military strength. Their government was centered around war and their army and had almost no culture. Sparta had many enemies, so their trade was nonexistent. The life in Sparta was focused on military strength. Although living in Sparta had some benefits, Athens was a better place to live than Sparta because of its fair and equal
Aside from this, that is about the only thing Sparta had going for them. Meanwhile, Athens was busy focusing on creating democracy and making famous literary works, like it was no big deal. Sparta, not so much, they just wanted strong jocks. After a reviewing a few elements of Athenian culture, it is clear to see Athens was clearly better than Sparta.
The cultures of Sparta and Athens were extremely different, especially in government, slavery, and daily life. Sparta prided themselves on their military power and nothing else, they did not bother building beautiful architecture
In comparison to other states of ancient Greece, Spartans were less cultured, due to their nominal interest in material possession. The Spartans while civilized and educated were less intrigued within the buildings of large monuments , than some of their Greek counterparts. Moreover, education was vital to the Spartans. Although their priority relied on military and combat over anything else, in many ways intelligence and knowledge were also important to succeed in war. Spartans’ would teach young children more than just the perplexing theories of war and strength.
