“What is the ‘Sudan Genocide’?”

The “Darfur Genocide” indicates to the ongoing slaughter and rape of Darfuri women, men, and children in Sudan. This genocide is referred to as “the first genocide of the 21st century”, as the killings started to occur in 2003. In Sudan, trauma and violence still lingers. As thousands have been killed and over a million are injured no shelter, Sudan is now filled with famine and annihilation.

“Where is the Sudan Genocide occurring?”

The genocide is occurring in the Darfur region of Sudan, a country in the northern parts of Africa. Darfur is, approximately, the size of Spain and consists of 6,000,000 people.

The genocide has been carried out by the Janjaweed, a group that was funded by the government of Sudan. The Janjaweed set Darfurian villages on fire, loot economic resources, pollute water, and torture, murder, and rape Darfuri civilians. Their motivation for the genocide is to gain and maintain control. Darfurians wanted more freedom from the government because they believed they were not being treated equally. The government responded by declaring an “ethnic cleanse” against the citizens of Darfur.

The citizens of Darfur were the victims. In 2003, two rebellious groups from Darfur rose up against the government, and accused the government of neglect and inequality. The citizens of Darfur wanted to branch off into their own government. The Sudanese government responded to their request by signing an agreement with the Janjaweed to kill the civilians of Darfur.
