APUSH P4 11/30/15 SRQS Chapter 13 – IMPENDING CRISIS How were the boundary disputes in Oregon and Texas resolved? • • Britain and the United States both claimed sovereignty in the Northwest, a dispute initially resolved by an 1818 treaty allowing “joint occupation” by settlers from either nation. • • Considerable numbers of Americans migrated to the Northwest in the 1840s. Despite conflicts with Indians, these migrants were able to establish permanent settlements and urged the U.S. government to solidify American claims in the region.

DBQ: Political Disputes 1820-1860 For forty-four years, the United States of America was a thriving country. We had won our independence from Great Britain and we had started to create a country that would change the world. Yet, in the year 1860, a joined country and political agreement between all states seemed utterly impossible. People fought with each other so deeply about slavery, the country was divided between slave and free states. By the time of 1820 through 1860, political disagreement grew so large, there had been only one answer.
It was important in holding back the settlement of South Dakota. The outbreaks of Indian attacks that occurred in Iowa in 1857 and in Minnesota in 1862 spread into Dakota. Troubles with the Indians went on until the army went against them in Montana and western Dakota. The Civil War was also a series to settlement because many settlers were living in the East(Dennis Daugaard). During the Civil War the western forts
The West was the most unexplored region in the United States in the 1800's. Railroad construction crews feared falling rocks from dynamite and shifting boulders. This led to the troops evacuating the area. The end of the war was peaceful and the US made a treaty. The treaty of Fort Laramie was signed. It ceased indian raids and stopped the Bozeman Trail.
The treaty of purchase was approved on April 7, 1867. President Andrew Johnson signed the treaty on May 28, and Alaska was officially part of the U.S. on October 18, 1867. Many Americans believed that the purchase of Alaska was a waste of money, and it became widely known as “Seward’s Folly”. After gold and oil were discovered in Alaska in 1896, Americans realized that the Alaskan purchase was worth the investment (“Milestones: 1868-1899”, 10/31/15).
Early in 1848, Mexico and the United States signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo . Mexico agreed to give up Texas and a vast region known as the Mexican Cession. This area included the present day states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, as well as parts of Colorado and Wyoming. This treaty was signed by various Native parties over a period of months after hard negotiations, the treaty sought to establish peaceful relations between the United States and Indian parties, as well as to settle reservation boundaries where the Indian people agreed to settle. The treaty lasted only until gold was discovered in the Black Hills in 1874. After the gold was found miners flooded the Black Hills which started the last of the Plains wars, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn
The people who settled the west were greatly dependent on the US government and the policies they adopted. The settling of the west in the late 19th century was similar to the settlement of the south in the 1830’s. Andrew Jackson drove out the indians so that the valuable land of the south could be secured by white settlers. Once again, the federal government made it possible to settle the west by forcing indians off of their lands. A recurring theme in American history is manifest destiny and the attempt to develop unsettled lands by the federal government.

The Bannock’s lands were located in what is now known as Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and into Canada. Another part of the Bannock tribe was its neighbors the Shoshone tribe.
The treaty the US government signed with the Indians in 1851 granted the Indians to have an extensive territory, which means the Indians can get more land, but eventually that did not last(doc 3,4). One of the most important and well-known wars was the Sand Creek Massacre. On November 29, 1864, John Chivington led 700 troops in an unprovoked attack on the Arapaho and Cheyenne villagers. There they killed over 200 women, children, and older men.
